Ambilight in the US?

I would like to purchase an Ambilight telelvision. I know some say it's gimicky, and lame - but I've always wanted one.

It looks like they sell very well and are developed all around the world except for the US/Australia where they're discontinued. So I have a couple questions.

- Has anybody had any luck purchasing one recently in the states, where? (Besides the obvious places like eBay, Craigslist, Amazon Marketplace)

- When purchasing one, is there a model I should avoid, or a model I should try to get?

The two models I've found are

Philips flat HDTV 42PF9631D 42" plasma integrated digital with Pixel Plus 3 HD and Ambilight 2 channel

and

Philips digital widescreen flat TV 42PFL5332D 42" LCD integrated digital with Pixel Plus 3 HD

I can't really tell if there's a difference between the two besides LCD/Plasma. They seem similar.

Is one better than the other? Would either be a good choice?

Any help/advice/comments/suggestions would be appreciated.

The difference between LCD and Plasma is significant, and so they cannot be "similar" in that sense. You probably should start your research on the respective merits and drawbacks of each type.
 
I'm not sure what you are asking exactly? There are differences, glancing at the specification list easily shows that, but most (if not all?) are as a result due to the difference between plasma and LCD technology.

Also just a note, the LCD information doesn't seem to mention ambilight?
 
So aside from the differences between LCD and Plasma there aren't any other differences between the sets?

One doesn't have Pixel Plus 3 over Pixel Plus 2, which is better. (I don't know if it is - just an example.)

I don't know much about TVs so looking at the specs is like reading a foreign language almost.

I think you might be misreading the spec sheets. They both have the same "Pixel Plus 3 HD" feature, which is from what I gather a post processing feature related to upscaling by Philips. Again I must point out that the LCD you linked doesn't mention it has Ambilight 2, which is the feature you are specifically looking for. You might be misreading that part.

My suggestion is you might want to try the AVS forums, as they are more TV oriented, and would off hand probably know more options for you regarding TVs that feature Ambilight.
