Ambient Occlusion with Ati?

I just saw some screen shots of Crysis with and without Ambient Occlusion, and it looked really cool and better with it on. Now I know in the new beta nvidia drivers 185.20 its include. But does Ati have this feature with their drivers and the 4 series of cards? And if not do they plan on supporting it at all?

SSAO (The Ambient Occlusion method that Crysis uses) runs as a pixel shader. It doesn't need driver support. Its also not a new feature, Crysis has had this since its launch (it was in the demo as well). It wasn't added by a special driver or patch.

Or are you referring to something else?

I saw the thread you're referring to and to me this is what I've always been seeing when playing both Crysis and Crysis: Warhead, so I'm not really sure if Radeon owners are missing out on anything.

I believe to enable it, you will need to run crysis in dx10, it should be part of any dx10/.1 spec card.

Incorrect. Ambient Occlusion runs on any DirectX 9.0c card. It is *NOT* a new feature, it is just a pixel shader. The effect has been possible since the geforce 6xxx / radeon x1xxx days (if not since the 9700 Pro). DX10.1 adds Global Illumination, which accomplishes a similar affect as AO but is superior (more realistic).

Again, AO is not a part of any spec, it is not a feature of the card or driver, it is a pixel shader. It will work on ANY card that can run pixel shader version 3.0 (might work on 2.0 as well). AO is the result of clever programming on the part of game developers, nothing more nothing less.

Slight correction of your correction ;) DX10.1 doesn't add anything - it just makes the GI algorithm faster / more practical to use in real-time.

Ah, I didn't know that. GI was always listed as an advantage of DX10.1 so I assumed that it was something new that was added. Thanks for the correction :)

Actually he's referring to the fact that AO is now a control panel option offered in NVIDIA drivers. There are pictures floating around with it off and on, showing the difference it makes in Crysis. But Crysis already has AO, so it's not the greatest example (two AO methods layered on top of one another).

ATI does not have anything similar.. the only way to get this feature is to have an NVIDIA board.

That said, the NVIDIA drivers that support this are not officially released. They were leaked and are not supported yet.

People still playing Crysis. Honestly that game is a bit tedious and boring. Warhead was
better, but I'd rather play fallout 3 or cod5. I saw screens with AO on / off...not something
to get excited about.
