I've seen this argued both ways as to who packages hard drives better Newegg or Amazon, and heard they've both changed their packaging standard. So as of today, who has it better?
Planning on buying a 1.5TB WD Green for storing music/photos/movies.
I live near in Southern CA, near LA if that is relevant.

is what I'm looking at. Currently leaning towards amazon, for the reduced tax, also newegg is sold out atm. also if you know a better deal on a WD drive feel free to post it ;)

Thanks in advance

edit: Just to clarify, don't want this to turn into a heated debate, I've heard bad, and good about both, so if they've both changed and are good now, I'm good with that.

not sure how much this will help, but my intel ssd arrived from newegg today and the ssd box (retail) was surrounded by bubble wrap which was wrapped around 3-4 times and placed in a bigger box. i don't know if you think this is acceptable for shipping, but in the box it was put into, the drive seemed pretty secure in the middle and protected from damage as my dad dropped the box after I showed him the drive inside :p

Go with ZipZoomFly. The hard drives that I've received from them each came in a foam box designed to cushion them.

NewEgg has improved its packaging of hard drives, but it's still not at the same level as ZZF.

I just received a wd drive from Amazon. It came in a small box with styrofoam grip padding like in that first picture. This box was inside another box which air cushions. The drive is working so far.

I'm in the LA area as well, and every time I have ordered a drive from Amazon, it has always arrived in a small box sandwiched between two large pieces of foam. Always great shipping from Amazon in my experience.

Just received a bare drive from newegg. It was wrapped 2-3 times by the bubble wrap with the big bubbles.

EDIT: The drive was wrapped in bubble wrap, and placed in a box full of packing peanuts. It was shipped alone.

I've personally had bad experiences with Amazon's HDD packing. Here's a pic of a WD6400AAKS I bought from them a few months ago.

That box had 2 airbags that were pretty much deflated so that hard drive was just banging around in that box the whole time. I really should get around to testing that drive...

I have ordered two of these hard drives from Amazon on separate occasions, and both were packed like this.

Just received 2 1.5 tb drives from newegg, one was with a whole bunch of other stuff, and one was a separate package. Both were inside another box inside the first, with 3 layers of bubble wrap.

Then again, amazon has been kinda cheaping out on packaging lately, with the crappy air cells.

Just received 5 drives from amazon in the past few months, all came individually packed in proper clamshell/bookends, double boxed. Newegg doesn't wrap the drive enough times with bubblewrap, IMO. I always get foam or clamshells from Amazon - plus, I'm in CA, so I prefer amazon. ;)

hmm alright, guess I'll just gamble on either amazon or newegg, depending on who has the better deal, and hope for the best.

I just received my two 640gb Caviar Black today from Amazon during the BF deals. The drives were sandwiched with two foams for protection. I'm in L.A. also.

Just noticed on the amazon page

I'm not sure what the plastic clamshells are, but I'm pretty sure that's exactly what I want. And they imply they ship it in the WD box alone. If I'm reading this right, that's disappointing

I ordered 4 WD Re3's from Amazon a few weeks ago they all came packaged with the black inserts like in the first picture and have been working great.
