My fine China I received when I got married came shipped similar to that picture so I can understand why it's done that way. Each "set" was in its own box bubble wrapped and then all of them were placed in an enormous box (so big and with heavy duty thick cardboard too that it wouldn't fit through the attic door) filled with packing paper and bubble wrap.
I don't know why that person though it necessary to post how many boxes it came in. I would rather have it safe and intact in multiple boxes than 8 different boxes minimally packaged. The 8 initial smaller boxes are likely how Amazon keeps the plates separate in the warehouse and then places them in larger boxes for shipping (but still small enough to ship feasibly).
