AM2+ boards, when?

I'm thinking about buying an AM2 X2 3600+ Brisbane to go along with some DDR2 I won through a competition. I don't have much of a budget for the CPU and mobo though, so the 60€ X2 seems like a very good deal, however the choice in AM2 motherboards is pretty limited where I live, in fact pretty non-existent. Theres only a few 690G and nForce 570-590 (which are fairly expensive) boards available, which according to reviews and forums don't offer much overclocking-wise.

According to various rumors I've understood that AM2+ boards should be backwards compatible with older K8 AM2 CPU's, so I was thinking I'd wait and pick up an AM2+ board rather than an older AM2 one and later upgrade to Agena or Kuma.

Now I was wondering if anyone knew of a possible date as to when to expect the first AM2+ boards? Though I'm probably right in thinking we'll only start seeing them during K10 launch in Q4/Christmas? :/

My intel on single proc desktop boards is, to put it gently, rough. However, the rumblings I am at least consistently hearing is that we will start seeing them around Compudex.

So the AM2+ boards should not be available the same time the Barcelona chips are released, right? AM2+ now, then in a couple of months the chips?

But does anyone else know when the boards are supposed/scheduled to be available to buy, or have a link that says when?

Honestly, I was looking forward to building an alternate rig with an ATi card and AMD AM2 enthusiast motherboard that used something other than nForce in the future. :(

Although I would like to get a AM2+ board, I just hate replacing my motherboard so Ill just probably stick with AM2 until AM3 on the 790 chipset.

Unless the performance increase, if any is substantial enough to justify the upgrade.

I spent some time searching around this weekend & wasn't able to find much of anything save for the announcement that Biostar's got a board ready. Anyone else find anything more on the subject?

I'd like to upgrade my S939 system soon'ish using an AM2+ board & get a cheap AM2 CPU; then upgrade to a Phenom once they arrive...

**Edit:

PCDuster points out that Newegg's got the Biostar on sale now in this thread. Like someone said in the replies, though, I'm definitely not considering this board for the backbone of my upgrade...

Does anyone have any idea of when the other AM2+ boards are going to start showing up?
I'm getting anxious to build my new comp :p

Should I just go with the Biostar? If I'm going to be waiting 2 months for another choice I'm definitely just going to go with it.

I had a S939 Biostar board on the nforce4 chipset. It was a good board but did not overclock well. The nforce 5xx series of chipsets was not very good all around. It will work, just do not plan on an enthusiast board.;)

the new biostar tforce boards seem to o/c very well...im thinking seriously on trying one for my next rig

Well, I just pulled the trigger on my new computer setup. I'm going to overclock a F3 stepping 3800+ until AMD cranks out an acceptable next-gen processor :p

Hopefully this Biostar board is a good one. I just couldnt stand to wait any longer :p

give us a review when ya get it

I'm starting to think that the Biostar may be it for a while; maybe until the holiday season...

I saw a thread in a forum at OCWorkbench saying the Gigabyte GA-M790-DQ6 (AMD RD790 chipset, AM2+ socket) would be out at the end of August. I've also seen a couple of other little tidbits here and there suggesting that the RD790 chipset should ship in quantity to mobo manufacturers by the end of August with boards coming in September (I think I saw this at www.xtreview.com). So, hopefully, these will come a little sooner than Yule.

Hrmm... I'd take anything from xtreview w/a huge grain of salt. Linkage to the OCWorkbench thread?

That Biostar board linked is just an AM2 board Biostar's marketing team is tossing the AM2+ ready moniker. Aside from BIOS updates, all AM2 boards should support AM2+ chips.

Hrmm. Even still, I'd rather have the full functionality of an AM2+ board. And with only 2 weeks till August, AMD needs to show me a reason to even keep waiting in the first place.

The only real benefit to AM2+ is the ability to keep the IMC active while the CPU goes to sleep. That and HT3.0, which is mostly useless on the desktop.

Even then for the split power plane to be useful you have to have an AM2+ CPU as an AM2 CPU would only use a single power plane.

Right. Hence my upgrade plan of AM2+ board + cheap AM2 CPU now, then Phenom when they arrive. I'd just like to get the process started, for fiscal reasons, mainly.

Well, the Biostar is a nice board, but I'm pretty sure its not actually an AM2+ board. Which is very disappointing to me. I was hoping to stick an AM3 processor in here in the future. I was able to get 3.1 stable out of my 3800+ (F3 stepping) however, so it is a decent overclocker. Also I dont like how far down the PCI-e slot is, but thats just a personal preference. I'm sure there are lots of boards like that.

So Intel is launching the X38 chipset September 9th, the day before AMD launches Barcelona, and rumor has it that AMD is launching more than just the new server processors. It would make alot of sense for Intel to preempt the RD790 launch with the X38.

This is the best preview of any AM2+ board I've seeen to date. It gives you a nice look up close at the chips on the board as well as a bunch of BIOS screen shots. The release has to be very, very soon.

Gigabyte GA-M790-DQ6

Nice find on the preview. Yeah, if they're posting stuff like this, then the chipset launch has to be just around the corner. I suppose it does make some sense to launch the boards now; mostly because AMDs desktop area is just going to be stagnant until Phenom.

The Biostar was already discussed in this thread, & determined to not actually be an AM2+ part.

gigabyte and biostar...

I wouldn't frown upon these two brands, in the past they have been very very sketchy at best and had problems galore... today they are making great components and are usually giving you a good performance to dollar ratio.

gigabyte and biostar...

> ECS and ASUS, Looks like biostar and gigabyte actually have quality control, don't knock them. Biostar has been a big player with c2d and AM2 as of late, gigabytes been dominating in the c2d department for awhile. Not too sure where you've been.
