AM2/AM2+ Question

hi guys,

I'm looking to build a new computer based on AMD technology. I would like my next build to be upgradeable so I am interested in AMD's future offerings and how they might relate to today's mobo's.

As I understand it:

I am looking at getting a 5000+ BE. I can take that CPU and plug it into an AM2/AM2+ mobo. When I am ready to upgrade, I can grab a Phenom (AM2+, right?) and plug it into the same mobo. Wikipedia says that AM3 chips can be used in AM2+ mobos so I should be able to plug an AM3 chip into the same mobo, right? Will there be any handicaps with using an AM3 chip on an AM2/AM2+ mobo? Or is that sort of unknown at this time?

This should provide me with some sort of future proofing, right?

it's largely an unknown - AM2+ CPUs were meant to be backward compatible with AM2 but see how few AM2 mobos have AM2+ compatible BIOS ...
Buy today what you need to do the job that you require & don't count on future upgradeability - that way if you get it you'll be ahead of where you expected to be.

I agree, future proofing is an exercise in frustration, buy what you need now because there is always something right around the corner:eek:
 
I would recommend waiting until the 45nm AMD CPUs come out later this year. It should land sometime in the summer along with the AM3 socket.
 
as said, it's largely unknown... my board, for instance, is an AM2, and does support the Phenom's... whether it's going to support any AM3 chips we have to wait and see. I'm not sure if it'd be helpful to ask any of the boardmakers if they have plans for releasing updated bios' whenever that happens, but it might not hurt.

On the other hand, I bought a board for less than 70 bucks, and I know I'll probably be able to get an equal or better board with AM3 and ddr2 support at the same price if ASUS decides not to do an update to the one I have.

I think for now, you can look through newegg customer reviews and board makers processor support list and kind of make an educated guess as to how it's going to play out.
 
I would get yourself that 5000+ BE since the price is dirt cheap for the performance you get out of it, and then pick yourself up a board with one of AMD's most recent chipsets (790FX, 770, 740G, etc. - these are all AM2+ boards). Then upgrade your cpu when 45 nm quads come out. As for AM3 cpus being compatible with AM2+ boards, I'll believe it when I see it (keeping fingers crossed).
