I am at 47C idle on the 2.8C at stock speeds...Cooled by a Zalman CNPS7000-AlCu w/ AS5...

I should definately reapply and reseat huh?

What are the some good case temps?

yeah, youre way too hot.

unless youre running an ic7 which supposedly records temps too high.

the p4 2.8c in my shuttle with no airflow idles at 38..

Which motherboard? If Abit, they tend to report higher temps. Try to use Motherboard Monitor or Speedfan and see what temps they report.

Motherboard is a IC7...

And the temps were gotten using MBM5...

Should I still reseat?

reseating doesnt hurt, but its probably your Abit reporting too high.

I have an IS7-E and it reports high like that also

whats your load temp?

Alright I am gonna try running at this and if I am unstable, then I reseat...

Or I might just reseat anyway...

Test load by running Prime95 right?

Filter is right that you aren't near danger. However, well, look at my temperatures. And bear in mind this is an AMD cpu that wasn't made for overclocking in a hot room in Alabama with a not so great air-conditioner and most of the case fans turned off for stability. P4s are supposed to run a lot cooler as I understand. Especially when you have a Zalman hsf. Anyway, running hot is technically ok, but the cooler you get it, the better it is on the processor's life, as well as the fact that you can get better overclocking.

does it still throttle at 60c like they use to or was that a myth I am curious I havent heard about it in long time

Reportedly, yes.

All P4's throttle back their clock speed when they get to 60C. They will throttle back to almost no clock speed to stay at or below 60C. But if it gets really bad, the system will just lock up.

Run WCPUID those of you with 60C. You might not be running "stock speed" after all. d-:

Anyway, you really should never see above 50C with an AMD cpu at stock speeds if you have semi-decent cooling (perhaps with the crap factory heatsink, but then no more than 55 or so.) I was told Intel's chips still run cooler than AMDs, but I'm not 100% sure. Regardless, my current CPU, even though it is overclocked and not meant to be, hasn't really topped 45 or so. As far as the lifetime of the CPU goes, higher = bad. Considering that I have a decently quiet hsf with only a copper core and all the rest is aluminum and some half dried up artic silver III (yeah, not 5) I really shouldn't think it's very hard to keep a stock cpu running nicely at considerably lower.

With my 2500+ overclocked to 3200+ with the "stock crap sink" I get 49C@load.

With that setup you should definitely get better temps than you're stating.

I have a 2.8C on an Abit as well, so in spite of higher reported temps, on my new SP-94 with AS-5 it doesn't breat 47 load, and it hasn't even settled in yet. That and my room is pretty damn warm right now (system temp is around 30 or 31 C).

Lol, maybe they gave you a better heatsink then. You should have seen the junk they gave me though. The fan ran at 3000 RPM and barely pushed any air even if you voltmodded it to higher and the aluminum heatsink looked like it was meant to cool one of those old 486 systems that sometimes used passive cooling. Also, bear in mind that, as I said, my system is running at hotter than it should be and I'll be fixing that pretty soon.
