I have a Antec Neopower Modular 480 watt PSU. Now I hear people talking about not being able to run 8800 SLI even on 750 watt PSU's.

Well I have 1 8800 GTX as well as 4 Hard drives, a highly overclocked Opteron CPU and about 10 Case fans. Rest of my components are in my Sig.

My question is should I upgrade my PSU or am I OK since everything is running OK? I mean, I dont know if IM at the limit of my PSU and if it is smart to run it 24/7?
 
I push my power supply really hard and understand the risks/precautions.
My PC needs over 23A on 12V yet I'm using a 15A PSU.

This however is a warning, I would NOT do the same with an 8800 system.
I'm happy trying out things with lower cost kit but blowing up your PSU and/or your shiny new really really fast kit will haunt you.
The 8800 uses way more power so more care needs to be taken.

The minimum recommended PSU is a new 500W with enough juice on the 12V rails for your clocked graphics card ;)
As PSU's become less efficient with age, you will be wise to get a more powerful one.
I wouldnt use the PSU you have.
 
It has 2 12v rails 1 16a the other 18a I believe... 34 A isnt enough? I mean I saw a really nice 120 A PSU hehe, but its super expensive :(
 
Its not necessarily whether 34A is enough, its could be your PSU has degraded and can no longer give that power.

lol, that PSU will last you a while :D
It is specced to ATX 2.2 which is great.
However, I dont know what that PSU really is, the name in all manner of combinations doesnt exist on google so I cant get the specs.
 
The specs are mean, its the best bang for the buck I can find. most other 1KW PSU's are in the 300+ range.

It has 6 12 V rails I believe all rated at 20a a piece. Thats like 120A total, which is freaking sick!

Just to clarify, its only gonna suck up what is in use, so like its not going to be sucking 1000w and 120a all the time right :)

Only if you stay within the optimal power consumption range.
In that range you can expect efficiency to be around 70 to 80%.

If you draw too little or too much current you will go outside that range and efficiency will drop.
It is a bit of overkill even for 1 8800GTX !
A good 700W PSU will be perfect.

edit:
if your 1000W PSU is maxed out and efficiency drops to 60%, that will be using 1.6KW from the mains !!
You might not wanna max that one ;)

120A on the 12V rails of a 1000W PSU is impossible. That alone is 1440W.

The absolute maximum current on 12V rails of a 1000W PSU is 83.3, but that would leave none for the 5V and 3.3V. 75A is nearing the actual maximum. Not bad, but definitely overkill for one 8800 GTX.

A good 700W PSU will run two 8800 GTX's and all the latest gear.
 
OK so a 1000w PSU is overkill. I thought so. So good 700-750 watt PSU will do the trick? Any suggestions on a good priced one w/ good specs?
 
NO NO NO NO NO NO NO

1. Rails do NOT add. That is why dual 20a power supplies almost NEVER = 40a. it just doesn't work.
2. Ditch the BFG. better choices for less.
3. Ditch the FSP. Better choices all around.

Since you seem like you are willing to pay for a quality psu, question: Ever intend on sli'ing 8800's? If you do, look no farther than ZIPPY or Silverstone's ZF models (ST65ZF, 75ZF, etc), or a Seasonic M12.

seems pretty bad ass for the price. 149.00 Shipped.

4 PCI-E connectors. 8 pin atx power for my motherboard.

4 12v rails w/ 18A each. I think this will hold me even if I decided to go dual 8800 GTX's :)

all reviews on this thing have been positive, and its modular which I like alot :)

Thanks for the help suggestions all. I have had my Antec 480 for like 2-3 years and its run 24/7, so its probably close to the end of its lifecycle.

Very very good choice. I'm sure that PSU wouldn't let you down.
 
I have so many case fans in my PC IM not worried about a little extra noise. I heard it is loud when being stressed, but if not stressed I heard it was pretty quiet. IM sure I can live with it :)

Should be here mid/late this week. I cant wait to put it in :)
