how come all the suddenly 6800 u is faster than x800 pro??

is it because of the nvidia drivers?

Why yes it is and I believe that the performance will continue to grow which I why I got one of those instead of the XTPE.

some people never thought they'd say that (including me)

more and more people are moving over to the darkside!! muhahahah!!!!!!!

Some people will tell you that ATi is shit, and some people will tell you that nVidia is shit.

But both opinions are really just the result of multiple bad experiences. I have had NOTHING but equal experiences with the two companies and I say that as a fact. nVidia doesn't make shit cards and neither does ATi overall.

Though nVidia has a lot of rough times the past few years.

But yes you are missing something. Once again we see the result of early judging and flimsy consideration of ALL of the factors in determining the quality and performance of computer hardware.

I'm just happy to see the title transfer back n' forth. Adds the variety of what to buy, though I'm waiting till the next line of cards come out. Tossing this 9800XT would be a waste to me.

The only reason I didn't grab a 6800U when my buddy ordered one a week or so ago is because ATI has given me such a good product for the last 15 months (9800Pro) that I want to remain loyal. The 6800U and X800XT are both awesome cards performing similarly where it matters. Buy which ever card is gonna suit your needs and easily integrate with your exsisting system. That was my thought on the new releases. So I ordered an X800XT. And now I wait.

did i miss all these weeks...with the newer drivers that bumped 6800 u over xt800pro??!!??!

are the frames faster and look better too or what???

somehow I still don't find 6800 u on the shelf...
and will a faster version of 6800 u coming out? and from my knowledge...xt800xt coming out beginning of july eh??

Its at least a closer race this time around, hardware-wise both are just about as capable as one another. The X800XT does have an advantage in DX8/8.1, the 6800Ultra may have an advantage in DX9.0c if & when Service pack 2 for XP shows up hopefully before fall (I don't expect any support in 95/98 or even NT/2000, Linux maybe in 5 years, lol.) Having a game that uses more than a pinky-toe worth of effects from 9.0c is another matter entirely. NVidia is not 9.0, so ATi kind of wins there too **puts on flamesuit** But also, NVidia tends to be a little faster in DX7 fixed function games too, but noone talks about them because its like the difference between 250fps and 300fps, of little importance today compared to image quality.

NVidia is pushing hard for developers to use Pixel and vertex 3.0 so that the ~60 million extra transistors do something other than just take up space (and to make it look better against ATi in those games) ATi was pushing hard two years ago to get developers to use DX8.1 Pixel and vertex 1.4 and 2.0 programmable effects so that their supposed ~30 million transistors did something other than take up space (and make them look better than Nvidia). But really all the pushes are just barely beginning to show up as a few 2.0 demos so far... DX7 fixed function integers still rule the roost, programmers are a stuborn bunch when it comes to programming a completely new visual engine, and I don't blame them.

The NV30 line from Nvidia (against the Radeon 9700/9800) was pretty weak, the Rage Fury line (against the GF3/4) was pretty weak.

Nvidia is pushing things like smartshader (32x0) and driver tweaks to get better performance, ATi is pushing things like Temporal AA, and ever advancing deinterlacing in video to get better visual quality at the same performance. Classical tactics on both sides. ATi has a fetish with calling things "HD" that are in no way related to it.

You can't go wrong with either of these cards though.

6800U is better since it has 4 more pipes and SM 3.0.
i wouldnt call the 6800u better than the x800xt tho.

Problem is, ATi has only for sure announced two cards in the high-end so far X800XT and X800pro. Nvidia has announced quite a few board variations, I think four so far.

The X800XT is quite fast when benched with the 4.5 or 4.6 catalysts, most reviewers put it faster than a 6800ultra (using then beta drivers, and that was only like last month or so.) The driver set from the 6800ultra is coming along nicely, and seem to have legitimate performance gains. Mind you, there have been reports of fairly decent speed tweaks on the 4.7 catalysts too (and hopefully, finally the hz adjustable Temporal AA, which should give a performance free doubling of AA at high rendering speeds)

I can't see why people are talking about the 6800GT, its not like any consumer actually has one, and does seem to be in the >$400 category regardless of the Nvidia wants to MSRP it at (they could say its a $200 card if they wanted to, its the consumer price that matters) Most of the 6800 line is quite expensive right now, as is the X800XT, the X800pro seems to be stabilizing at around $440 but most importantly people are getting their hands on them.
