I am wanting to get a 6600GT AGP card, but i have been told that AGP is out of date and 6600GT is getting old.

I am worried that in 3 months time i will be regretting spending £150 on this graphics card, am i making a mistake by buying a graphics card which i have been told is out of date? Should i wait a month for so until a better graphics card comes to my price range?

What's your computer's specs? AGP is on its way out, next time this year I'd doubt you'll find many AGP cards around. If your whole comp is in need of updating, then you might focus on building a new comp and using a PCI-e card with that. If you already have a high end comp, and you only need a good graphics card to complete it, then you might wanna get an AGP card. I'm guessing you're in the former situation, considering you're going for a mid-range card, so I'd wait :cool:

agp will be with us a long time.

just like you can STILL buy pci cards.

such a large AGP base exists that i expect agp cards to be around at least 1 year at the VERY min.

a 6600GT will be a fine card.
 
who the hell told you that the 6600gt is getting old? lol.... the geforce 4 Ti series is still around, and is playing games like HL2 really well...

Well, my point was that newer AGP cards are dying out. I doubt you'll be seeing new generations having an AGP version (at least of higher end cards anyway).

Can't help you on XFX, never owned one. Here's a review though: http://www.nvnews.net/reviews/xfx6600gtagp/index.shtml, they got a pretty good overclock out of the card too :cool:

I think BFG is pretty good......
 
Dude get MSI, their software bundle is kick ass. Plus I think they use a copper heatsink on their cards.
BFG are great because of their life time warranty.

He is right it is copper. I have a MSI NX6600GT AGP........it is awesome, and the bundle is great too, get it.

Im not saying go PCI-E now, but you should start looking into saving up, it's been rumored the next gen wont support AGP, and if it does, it will be a few months later, and cost more
 
I have a 3.0Ghz system at the moment, so in about a years time i will update the whole system.This card is just to put me up for a year or so.

Though, i think i have hit a problem. My system is:
3.0Ghz Pentium 4
512MB RAM
120GB 7,200rpm HDD
200GB 7,200rpm HDD
CD Drives
CD/DVD Writer
Floppy
Nvidia GeForce FX5200 128MB
240W PSU

Would upgrading my card to this 6600GT be a problem because my PSU is only 240W?

If you plan to get a new system in a year, then the 6600GT card will serve you just fine until then.

As you think, you might want to get a new PSU as it is on the low side. You should be able to find a 350-400w for about £30-40
 
Hmmm, the minimum PSU for the XFX 6600GT is said to be 300W, so it looks like a PSU upgrade for me.

I think the worst thing that will happen is you will have to wait a month or two after the PCI-E versions come out to get your hands on an AGP version. Once they stop producing the newest cards in AGP you will probably have gotten an entirely new system by that time.
 
Hell no the 6600GT ain't old, i got one it perform great best cad i bought so far. And agp won't be out of date for a long time so relax.
 
A 6600GT will spruce that system up NICE. Only thing wold be maybe consider a gig of ram with how cheap it is these days. With that, for the better performance now and until next upgrade, I'd do it even if it makes that next upgrade an extra few months. Have a lack of ram for a year or have a nice all around system that might age a little better.

show me a company that is not going to support agp and ill show you a company that is going out of business.

untill pci-e hits a critical mass then agp will be around for a while.

no company in its right mind will abandon that huge market. would you???

but yes.. its on its way out.
 
i must disagree with the agfp card are gonna be totally gone next year that someone posted people just spent 600+ on the 800xl when they first came out i think its gonna be a few years before agp is totally done
