Am I doing something stupid here?

I am making my own case. I currently have an old antec case that has a back panel that is too small for a 120mm fan (yes even too small to mod one in there). I don't want to cut out that back panel and use that in my newly 'built from scratch case'

So here is what I am thinking...

I was thinking that since I won't be using the back panel off of a factory made case, I will make one! But, I will move the mobo back in the case about 2" and have the cables plug into the motherboard inside the case. Then, all I would have in the back of the case would be a small bunch of cables.

here's a pic to make things easier...

EDIT: oh and I would have to duct the PSU fan out of the case...

Please leave feedback!!! Thanks. :D

Intresting idea. but i have another idea for you.

Why dont you run modded cable extenders into a split loom pipe of some sort? that way you wouldnet have to open your computer every time you want to move your computer, you could make a nice 1-1.5 inch hole and run the split loom though that. you could even work with it a bit so that you can push the split loom back into the case and have it be out of the way for lan transport or something.

I think your idea might work, but i would be worried about putting alot of strain on the connectors, you could always combine my idea and yours and just run cable extendors out the rubber opening

The real clean way to do this would be to create a io panel near the bottom of your case using cable extentions and some dremel work!

keep in mind you might want to run ducts for the fans so you still have airflow, [EDIT] But you already mentioned that as i was typing this [/EDIT]

Im doing this for a mod Im going to be working on. Make sure you secure the cables so they dont pull from the mobo...

Also, where are you getting the extension cables from? Let me know with links please!

I like the idea of making a i/o area on the bottom of the case... now how do I get the extensions?

Those are what I need...

All I would have to do is take the necessary lengths out of those cables and solder them back together?

I've done the recessed motherboard thing before. Not a good idea. It's a pain in the ass. You might as well just cuz the rectangle out for the mobo I/O's then use a regular ATX I/O that comes with your motherboard.

The extender idea is great except it's a spendy little project.

although if you get some nice chrome panel mount connectors it can look really nice :)

I counted, and I only use about five I/O connectors. I only need 5 extensions. I found most of em on ebay for about $4 shipped each.

As long as you have some soldering experince i think it should be fine, the only one you would run into some trouble with is the VGA cable since thats alot of wires. Good luck!

if you where watter cooling and you use extenders and lock them down then it seems to be ok once you set it up. the problem looks like if and when you have to get in there, if you dont move it much, it looks ok, the rubber is a cool idea, but if you can just mount the femails of the extenders you wouldnt need that (or cut little holes out of a pci blank, so you can run the cable, put the blank on and have everything kinda bolted down

i see a problem for air cooling, even if you duct the air to parts, then you have to duct it out, and then you have to deal with the air not around the ducts getting warm,

maybe if you hindge the back wall and the side wall so they open at the same corner, then you should be able to get in there easy but it would take some work

ok well good luck and happy modding

My last expirience with video extension cables resulted in a line on my display. That may not be the case these days but worth mentioning and looking into.

OT: Anyone else feel the need to just answer "yes" after reading the title?
