Am I crazy? (Surround vs. Eyefinity)

First a little background... I currently have a NVidia 980TI with 3 1920x1080 monitors (for Surround) + 1 40" TV as an accessory monitor.

I used to use toggle created by forum user UnknownOne, but since adding the fourth monitor, it no longer plays nicely. As most of you may know, Surround is a PITA when switching back and forth from extended/surround. I decided to stay in surround and use other tools to make up for what I loss in extended mode, but its not working the way I would like.

I love triple monitor gaming and not looking to give it up, but am now considering making the switch to AMD for Eyefinity because I heard its a better implementation and may solve some of the headaches I am experiencing. Which leads me to my questions...

- Will Eyefinity allow me to toggle easier between extended and Eyefinity even with an accessory monitor attached? Or does it have something in place to allow video windows to only maximize to a single display (i.e. hulu, mlb.tv, and pretty much every other flash/media player)?

- What would be a comparable equivalent (something on the horizon) if I do decide to make the switch and what expectations should I have?

- Am I crazy to consider jumping ship from Nvidia to AMD primarily due to Surround vs. Eyefinity?

I put this in the video card forum because I am willing to hear both sides of this conversation. I would rather it not become a Nvidia vs. AMD war, but more of a discussion of pros vs. cons for a specific situation.

Thanks in advance!

JD

For Eyefinity, all monitors In a display group must be connected to your primary card. I have never attempted to connect a 4th display, but I can approximate it with a second cable. Will do that when I get back in town.

Alternatively, although it won't make switching between multi-monitor and surround gaming easier, Nvidia's new 1070/1080 gpu's will use new tech that allows for rendering correction for angled side monitors, causing better alignment, and preventing excessive FOV stretching.
Skip to 1:23 of the nvidia live stream broadcast to see it in action.

That feature alone is why I'm going to upgrade from a 980ti to a 1080.

Ever think of a 21:9 34"? Most of the way to surround, no bezels and less headaches.

If you're hooked in multi monitor I'd stay nVidia for crazyrob's reasons.

So, Eyefinity on AMD's side is MUCH more flexible. You can have a few presets that switch between different desktop arrangements, If you have 3 monitors in a row, you can have a preset eyefinity setup with all of them linked, and a preset with all intendant extended. You can even have different presets for 2 and 3 in eyefinity and 1 extended, 3 extended and 1 and 2 in eyefinity... you get the idea. You can also have mixed-orientation eyefinity, so you can mix portrait and landscape setups, mixed resolution monitors, you name it.

Overall, I've had only troubles with Nvidia surround, Eyefinity is in a whole other world when it comes to usability.

I used to have the Dell 34" 21:9 monitor, and while it was nice, it's not nearly as useful as a triple display setup. In regards to bezels, I have the U2417Hs, so there isn't too much of that and it looks really nice.

That sounds really promising and in theory something I'd be interested in.

I thought about more what I would use the accessory display as and decided that it's going to be more for media consumption, so i'm trying out a stream device on it and going back to just three displays on my PC for now.

Man, thanks for showing me that. I'd be lying if I said I didn't want to try that out in person... I may have to look into an upgrade after all.

Wish I had a better comment to post, but I know how much of PITA it can be to get Surround even working properly on my setup. Although, I would not go with AMD just because it seems like they have many more headaches to deal with in other areas.
