Am considering this rig

Through PM, I'm able to find out that he lives only miles within me so I'll be able to go over there and see the rig sometimes soon. He already have sent me pictures of the rig, looks good. It's also overclocked to 3.075Ghz.

I however want your advice on running this as a dedicated SMP Folder, will this produce good PPD and more importantly will it complete the WU on time?

What I know is that this is a Dual Socket 604 XEON 1.6 LV and it has HT so that means two real cores, "four" logical ones. I would like an estimate on the PPD and what not if possible, the more I know the better decision I can make. Thanks guys.

i'm assuming these are the old prestonia xeon LVs. i kind of doubt they would finish smp WUs. that being said, you get 30W procs probably capable of 150PPD a piece if i'm thinking of the correct ones

Yeah, you are correct in every aspect, however this has been overclocked to almost 100% from the following spec:

Xeon LV 1.6 1600 MHz 512 KiB 400 MT/s 16x 1.187/1.274 V 30 W Socket 604

Anyways, any est. on the PPD if it's able to finish a SMP WU. I am trying to figure out if this is worth the buy for the said price of 225 considering that it'll be a dedicated folder. If not then I'll look for something else to fold with as well.

just sort of a # crap shoot, at about 3 ghz, compared to say my x2 4800 stock. my x2 gets 700-1100 depending on WU. architecture considerations i would say maybe 500-800, but that's a TOTAL guess

edit: at those speeds you also lose the wattage point

Since the prices of new stuff is so cheap, I can't see buying that setup for folding.

I'm a bit confused.... he lives miles within you? Wouldn't that be painful?

Anywho, I wouldn't recommend it if you are looking at it as a folding rig. I also wouldn't recommend it for a server build, since it's been modified (u-wires.) I don't EVER trust someone else's custom work on a PC, and you don't know how old the parts are (at least not with any amount of certainty.)

You are basically paying over $200 for a server that's old, (probably) won't fold SMP units [or best-case it can, but BARELY before the deadline, making it about 250-300 PPD], and has a pretty bad setup compared to top-of-the-line servers for less than 3x that price. You aren't getting a warranty on those parts, either, so if you buy it and the chip's fried from years of overvolting there's nobody you can go complain to about the purchase.
