Alternative to BFG's PPU cooler?

Asking for a guy who contacted me on MSN.
He would like to know if anyone could recommend him a better, quiter cooler for the BFG PhysX?
He is not to happy about the ~32db of standard cooler and the +$30 for the Asus PhysX is to much for him.
The ideal solution would be a cooler with the same 2 pin plug as on the PhysX but he also have the option of using a regular 3 pin plug.

Anyone got a good suggestion to him?

Terra - Any advice would be most welcome :)

I think it uses same mounting holes as the geforce ti4200 and the like...

It's a chipset fan by the look of it - probably a bit small even if the mounting holes work...

It's ~5mm bigger than the BGF cooler and fits a GF4 MX.
But I don't know if it will fit the PhysX...something about the PhysX using the same layout as the GF4 Ti sockets...I think...

Terra - I am in the dark here *L*

It should - it lists 5 series and MX series compatibility...

I'd go for the iceberq pro just to be safe... might even be quieter?

In my experience, the Iceburqs are the quietest chipset/vga coolers I've ever used. They also look really nice :)

Thanks for your inputs(all of you)

Terra - I'll let you know if he needs more info :)

He's got one final question:

hey terra, edit your last post and ask if MX and TI mounting holes are IDENTCIAL or if there is a difference, that should clear things up once and for all

Terra...

The PPU does NOT use the standard mounting holes, it uses the same holes as the Geforce4 4200-4600 did.

The regular Iceberg4 will NOT fit on there, as the mounting brackets are simply too small. You have to get the Iceberg4 Pro which has the more spaced out holes for the GF4 Ti series. I used a Vantec Iceberg4 Pro to replace the stock heatsink that I burnt up, and it is currently running great. It just has a regular 3-pin fan power plug though.

Thanks for your reply.
I am sure that he will be VERY glad for this info! :)
Once again the [H]ardforum delivers! :D

Terra - Thanks guys..all of you! :)

It is a bit of a bummer, the Iceberq4 Pro (just noticed it was spelled with a Q, heh) comes with 4 nice copper ramsinks that would just go perfect on those ram chips, but the iceberq4 Pro itself covers the ram chips enough to make that impossible :(

It has about the same exact blue glow that the stock one has, which I thought was kinda funny.

Hmm..sad yeah.
The heatsink/cooler on my Asus PhysX P1 cools both the PPU and the RAM.
That and the lower dB was why I got it from Asus and not BFG.

Thermalright V1-Ultra should fit on there, a bit pricy, but damn awesome.

now lets mod some 4600s into physic cards :)

Why stop there?
Why not try and make a X-Fi to a PPU? ;) *L*
Or a GPU to a soundcard.

Terra - Or a NIC into a PPU? :D

I wouldn't mind having an XFI Fatal1ty from an MX440, a 10/10000 ethernet from a geforce 3 Ti, and a quad-ppu from a voodoo 5 6000

I tried to put a VF900 on it. Don't even bother. It does not fit.

I may try a VF700 though.

Dosn't those 2 coolers have excatly the same fan socket mountings?

Terra...

Well, the VF900 has 4 mounting points, and the BFG card only has 2. So, it was a little lopsided, and actually killed my PhysX card.

However, the VF700 seems to fit, however, it was a little tricky since there is a large capacitor, and you will need to either shave some of the heatsink off, or bend the fins.

I wouldn't recommend it, but I put the heatsink from my spare 6200 on my BFG when I had it.

It was hot to the touch (few seconds before it got painful), but didn't really give me any problems. Of course, playing cellfactor for half an hour or GRAW for a few may or may not have actually stressed the card, so it's hard to question stability.
