alternate use for ppu

Plain and simple, if you have to write a page and a half to computer enthusiasts to justify your purchase and you don't have them convinced, it was probably a bad purchase.

Maybe they will be good in the future, Maybe not. Only time will tell, but for now, they are as useless as tits on a bull.

I'am not justifing. But wenn people hear the same thing over and over they start to believe it. If they hear also a counter word they more like to think for them selfs. Then copy a populair opinion. And then form there opinion with a more complete argumentated input. As for most people they are not so in to it. But have a opinion and also want to form there own opinion about PPU.
It not a bad purchase as I enjoy my PPU. But for some people id was disapointed as they where bad informed and had far fetch expetcation not fullfiled in a very short time. And wich if ageia loose I have some collectors items. I bought mine PPU's with the knowledge that is could not take off. But before that could happen we got a couple of 20 games by then, including UT2007 and CF:R.
Wich its worth it as CFR would be uniek. Plus wenn I bought them there was and still is strong support by Dev's. So I took the risk
And if sucseed. Ageia first PPU attemped will be dated after 2 years. So if ageia comes with a PPU2 and PhysX games are still roling out in the 30 or 60 by then.
I would upgrade my PPU in time.

Most people have to be economically minded. If I had a cash tree in my backyard I would probably have an an Aegeia card myself.

On that note, If I had a cash tree I'd probably buy myself a back yard.

These threads are always really entertaining. I wonder if these PPU's come with a form in the box "Before using you must swear to love your PPU and never bash and always defend it from any and all attackers on all online forums, despite its cost and lack of usability."

PPU isn't for the poor. If you are poor it will be a big isue to make a gameble config out of lowbudged component. Forget PPU forget a nice game experience. forget as it's ment to be played. It the game of Budged and the trade off you must take.
The best solution is Play older games wich would run in a more optimum state or low requierment games.
If I had a cash tree in my backyard I would probably have an an Aegeia card myself.
? such card that cost as much as a game soundcard or midrnage G-card. is very affordable but then again for poor people not. Most working people could aford it as it count to 3 to 15% of the cost to a complete PC. the porblem is the low amount of supporting games out now. But that now and now don't last long.

With such tree I would have rather a BMW M5 2006/7 model.
On that note, If I had a cash tree I'd probably buy myself a back yard.
I would take over a publisher and a few Dev house to make Space games wich are more Focused on Features set and well thougth gameplay. And given the time to make the best game the can be made with such resources.
That would be a RPG SF SPace game where a uniek games arise focused on exploring.
Wich means a large Content creation department. So much to discover.
For now missing the Tree. I can only do a Gamedesign document. And the iteration steps. :)

Cost is relative and usablity also.
For most people the cost to usablity ratio is not so good by a large margin.

But does it means it's bad? I don't think so. Well a lot of people are burning PPU to the ground with there short sighted view of it's current state as if ther's no tommorow. But don't takin into the acount what the future could bring. The better reviewer keep a open mind and lets wait it out. [H] is one of those. while uncle Tom is more the other coming with conclusions.

So my opinion I can't give a conclusion. Maybe in 2008 to 2011. Wenn we could look back on it.

Uhm mind not reading too far into my post?

I said, it has no use NOW, it'll have a use later. I never said, "ZOMG BUY IT NOW FOR FUTUREPROOFING LOL"

I said HOLD off on the judgement. I didn't put it on a pedistal, and I didn't call it a flop. I said, "wait."

Far too many people are calling it a waste of money, and some are even heralding it as a huge success. Anyone that says this is clearly JUMPING TO A CONCLUSION, as there isn't enough data out there to accurately judge this product.

This is also what I mean in bold.

Maybe you should apply and get a job with aegia in public relations, then maybe you can get paid for all this defending you do. Unless thats why you're doing it...

i actualy bought one of these cards a few weeks ago. i found it for 89$ on ebay and said "hey theres a deal". i wanted to experiment with it. well now that ive played the single level in cell factor beta 600 times watching the prety explosions and boxes flying everywhere, i go on to look for some new games. there arent any. i have the copy of GRAW that came with the card, when i disable the card the game plays the same as with the PPU. i was thinking about trying Bet on Soldier, but when i go to install it, it uses the rootkit DRM starforce, so that isnt going anywhere near my computer. and thats about all the games available. so coming from someone who actualy spent the money on it, im not going to say "just wait until games are released to see what it can do", i have seen what it can do, and, i agree, its unimpressive at best.

and with the whole "games arent available YET" arguments aside, how are you planning on playing any multiplayer game with physx on anything less then a 1000mb lan connection. you thought your conterstrike pings were high in the 300s. imagine all the objects the server now has to account for and constantly update positions of and broadcast that all to the clients in real time. once the majority of people have a fiber connection in their houses we might see some multiplayer potential.

but for now, if your thinking of buying one of these cards, buy mine off ebay. if someone already bought it, then i would say not waste your money on a *currently* useless card.

Maybe you should stop personal attack me with your childish no argument reply's. With one pourpouse to start a flame war.

Look at ghost6303 he got argumentation and hands on experience.
He got a bad experience but that more to Graw wich is just the first game.
First Graw is a bad example for PhysX. Judging PPU only with Graw in mind.
But that all what can be done now.

ghost6303 said:

Dito
well now that ive played the single level in cell factor beta 600 times watching the prety explosions and boxes flying everywhere, i go on to look for some new games.
Wenn I bought mine I did know Graw is bad PhysX example game. But I bought it to get hands on experience with the CF demo. Knowing it is a demo and it is a LAN game. It hasn't much content only one playfield. But I want to experiment also in LAN. Bought two.
And of course in between I play other non PhysX games to.

Ofcourse I was lookin out for PhysX games to. Till know
JTF and BOS I playing to.
JTF is just like Graw it doesn't do so much with PhysX
As BOS it's more the flame thrower. it looks crude so this game doesn't stand out. But keep in mind this flametrower is aimed at gameplay physics.

But what gives me the most value is that with.
CF:CT Demo R36 The Reality engine comes avaible. So you can mod CF With Reality Builder. Mod and editing it script files C# that it's.
It asault weapon script is 60 pages big so no easy task.
MultyTaskin MSVC# express and Reality builder

Ofcourse the time for experimenting with PPU would be at best if CF:Revolution is out.
It has more MAps 5 and more PhysX implemented.
More Content and scripts to Mod on.

Most people aren't into moding or programming so for them the games out are the most important isue of lak of them. But that's temporaly but not solved in a month or two maybe four :).
there arent any. i have the copy of GRAW that came with the card, when i disable the card the game plays the same as with the PPU.
Well before I bought mine I did my home work so I did know what to expect so did not get disapointed. Most dissapointed people just bought one and then find out all or the important stuff about it. And where it boils down to it. They jumped to early on it.
While most review where negitive.

If it must be worth for you with lot of games Buying one would only make sense wenn a lot games are out and at least a couple good ones. While Graw is a good game it's a bad one for PhysX.
i was thinking about trying Bet on Soldier, but when i go to install it, it uses the rootkit DRM starforce, so that isnt going anywhere near my computer.
Well already played X3 reunion wich happen to use Starforce so in my case allready starforce installed so a don't mind starforce games that work for me. Played BOS out.
My first PhysX game I played out btw.
and thats about all the games available. so coming from someone who actualy spent the money on it, im not going to say "just wait until games are released to see what it can do", i have seen what it can do, and, i agree, its unimpressive at best.
For most people it better to wait for Revolution and UT2007
That would make a PPU a bit usefull
and with the whole "games arent available YET" arguments aside, how are you planning on playing any multiplayer game with physx on anything less then a 1000mb lan connection.
Revolution can be played even online.
The PhysX load is adustable for the server. It determinse how many player with what for physX load can play.
CF:CT doesn't have that flexibility so a 4 player max in LAN will do. and that more bandwith then online player have.
For LAN revolution can be set to full PhysX 100mbit wil do. The game session that act as server or the dedicated one could use a 1000mbit link.
you thought your conterstrike pings were high in the 300s. imagine all the objects the server now has to account for and constantly update positions of and broadcast that all to the clients in real time. once the majority of people have a fiber connection in their houses we might see some multiplayer potential.
It is strange that they make a online game to show off PhysX? But it will show us that it can be done. Just like graphics Physx can be tweaked to run smooth on avaibel hardware. Servers and clients.
This problem don't exist in singleplayer games. Games with a story and plot.
Wich I expect more form PhysX.
but for now, if your thinking of buying one of these cards, buy mine off ebay. if someone already bought it, then i would say not waste your money on a *currently* useless card.
For most people. It could get better in time yes waitin is a b * ch but it take some time to make games.
The surely take the time for UT2007. But then again for such AAA title you can expect more from. And more time means more chance of a better and finished game.

I lookin for a third PPU wenn I rebuild my third Vista ready GameRig. But that would be a PCI-E PPU.

ALso I'am in to Programming with it.

So my experience isn't gaming only

Graw
CF:CT demo
BOS
JTF
ROL

But with it also

Realitybuilder
CF Scripting C#
PhysX SDK

For me ageia physX make more sense to me then HavokFX.
Because I can't aford HavokFX. Only play there games supporting it.

I know for pure gamers it make no sense for now.

I've stepped away from the PPU forums for sometime now (bye bye Terra :p) and I honestly can't believe you guys are still arguing about this. The PPU was not and is still not worth the money. Even at a $100 there is almost no reason to buy it, enthusiast or not. This is where we need Steve Ballmer to start screaming out "Developers Developers Developers Developers!".

Hehe, yeah I agree.

Well calling people, wich doesn't think in you corner, stupid and then suprised off anny frustation? And most of all your not the only one. I don't mind critic on Ageia they are still not up to speed with there Physx revolution. But the have just started ther adventure in this new hostile market. As underdogs. And its a slow porces as it take time to make games. But exaggerate the bad thingst. Just making look it much worse then it is. Is something I must put straight. People who read this and aren't into it. Might believe you.

Calling people stupid is no discussion it attacking.

I can't believe that you wrote this. Maybe the translation from dutch isn't clear but if something's cost to usability ratio is "not good" that makes it, by definition, bad, unless of course the thing in question is ornamental, which a ppu is not.
Well My english is bad, my dutch to btw. But as simplistic as this.
Ratio is low. Means it isn't zero or infinite but somewhere low.

Wich means if usefull ness ratio is low it isn't zero. So there is usability, where I spend my cash on. But not something people will run for the store for.

It usefullness to me wenn I bougth it is CF:CT. I want to know how this game demo played and are willing to spend €456 for it, just for a demo. Knowing that at that time it usefull ness on a grand scale, number of games out is low and game of importance is zero for most people and the only game out was Graw.
Well I did know it add some more debri and particles. Wich has a bit usefelness altho still low. Where I didn't need to have a PPU for but it add something. Better explosions, nice.
Still altho its low usefullness I spent €456 on its use it has that day.
It use growed a bit till now.
For me
Reality builder released with CF:CT R36.
PhysX SDK and driver performance growed.
BOS some fun doggeing flame throwers.
PhysX SDK

For most people wich don't like
Graw
BOS
CF demo
Pure gamer so they don't need the SDK and don't Mod games.

It has totaly no use for them now but for some people altho only a few it has but could change if a title comes out wich is populair and PPU add much to it.
When you put an idea in front of me, I can tell you whether that idea has *potential*. Physics in games has *potential*.

When you put a final product in front of me, I can come to a conclusion about it. The first hydrogen fuel-cell cars are mostly USELESS but they have a great IDEA. That doesn't mean anyone should buy one. In fact, people should *not* buy them because they will not be able to buy hydrogen anywhere.
Yah sure, you forget that this Hardware depends on avaible software. So potential will be a geus as what software will bring in time will be a gamble. Like we can't look in the crystal ball how games whill come thru. And what effect CFR and UT will bring with it. To much factors that come into play. Wich makes it excited.

So potentional means a revolution is posible but if it comes is not sure. That depends if some dev make it happen. Like pull it off. Potentional is no garanty for sucses.
It in the hands off the dev's.

So I'm going to analyze the rest of your post and split it into two categories:
The following is irrelevant and/or incomprehensible:
The mayor point is you make look PPU bad for online play. As like it impossible.
Plus some how I must explain why I have PPU card's. wich I did and skip that.
As for the online down side yes it is there. but that equal for every Physics solution.
But geuss what. CF:R is also a online game with PhysX and PPU support.
So The dev deals with in in a manner to give gamers and server admins the choice of how much Physics you want. Just like how you can adjust GPU setting to your hardware.
CFR is adjustable to game needs and net performance.

Killa_2327 said:

True for most people. Not me. As for most people budged and large value ratio is most important. And of course the games people like or ganna like. Graw is a nice game but no high flyer.
Even at a $100 there is almost no reason to buy it, enthusiast or not.
Well how enthausiast would blow there money is up to them. $100 is pocket change for the rich ones. I find that very personal and relative. Almost is important here. It's the lack of games supporting it out now its number is still small. The lack of using PhysX in a way that give PPU value to a game to make it stand out.
But there are games out and you can use it now. So a enthausiast can.
This is where we need Steve Ballmer to start screaming out "Developers Developers Developers Developers!".
I wonder wenn CF: R comes out? must be close if not delayed?
It release date was December / winter.

I not agree. Think of Crusades religion clashes. Witchhunt. There are believers and non believer. But the direct counter part of cristians, if that suposed to be me. I believe in PPU :) they still can pull it off altho they get a strom wind against it. Competition Islam/boedism?GPU nV/ATI? I'am more a agnost, I don't know how it turns out, I hope it does.
The other camp are satanist.
The darkside :) Anti PPU.

I get the impression lot of people wont give PPU a chance. I wonder if CF:R and UT'07 change it all. Will they keep away from PPU as it get is usefulness to a larger crowed.
