After swapping out the stock fans on one of my CM Hyper N520's with these and actually reading up on how to overclock one of these things, I finally have a result that is less embarrassing... 191 x 20 = 3.82GHz :D

Vcore is reading 1.216 and Vtt is reading 1.328 in the bios, which is lower than i have them set (+.04 Vcore = 1.24? and 1.36 Vtt.) Memory is at 1528 Mhz, 9-9-9-24 @ 1.60v. Temps are in the high 60's to low 70's full load...not the greatest, but not bad considering this thing will fit in a closed 4U case. She ran a memtest86 pass and quite a while on stresscpu2 without a hiccup. She is now turning 3:15 frames on an A3, which looks pretty good to me. Tomorrow, back to bigadv!

I could maybe get 1 or 2 more Mhz bclk with some Vcore and Vtt adjustments. She wanted no part of 195 bclk ever with significant voltage increases. I am kinda stuck in finding my max bclk since i have no way to lower the multiplier on this board. If it will hold for bigadv, I am happy with it.

My biggest problem (and the biggest bonehead move on my part) was leaving the memory timing set to auto, which for some reason had the memory trying to run at 7-7-7-20 @ 1528. My memory just isn't anywhere near that good once under load. Backing back to its rated 9-9-9-24 seems to have worked like a charm. It is slightly under its 1600 MHz rating, but I can live with it where it is.

I know it has been linked several time lately, but the overclockers.com guide for overclocking an I3/I5/I7 is fantastic. You can check it out here.

One down, 3 to go....

Wondered why your points wavered there for a sec, that's better!

My points wavered because I had all three bigadv boxen uploads a unit today. I have 183K today plus the 10pm update. If only that was my normal number....

190 bclk was easy with my sig rig and almost stock voltage. EVERYTHING after that required significant voltage. It's under water so can handle the heat. My 920 is a C0 and the second one (going up on Friday) is also a C0. From what I read (nearly a year ago now) is that the C0's could hit 3.8 without much effort, but anything after that required some work.

i was smelling blood!

If you're at 3.8ghz and stable i would probably stay there. There's no reason to eeck out 1 or 2 mhz, it will just lead to headaches and stability questions. Good job.

Yeah it really boils down to whether or not an extra hundred mhz is worth the volts and degrees. I scaled down my 2nd i7 to 3.7 just because it keeps it a lot lower on both. In terms of TPF you really don't gain much by going above 3.7-3.8 anyway (that's what I've found at least).

I ended up backing is down to 3.80. It ran through a couple A3's yesterday, so I switched it back to bigadv last night. For those who want to compare Windows to native Linux, I am seeing 30 minute 15 second frame times plus or minus a couple of seconds, and just short of 29K ppd under Ubuntu 9.04.

Shit! I'm at 33:30 with 25.5k under the VM at the same speed, I'm gonna have to switch over to native next time I'm home for a WU ending

especially now that your at 3.5 months from me, gotta put up a fight right?

Do it! Use something simpler to set up like Ubuntu desktop (there are reports the 9.10 is better for bigadv folding than 9.04.) You can shut down the GUI once you get everything set up, or just leave it run to monitor temps and such. I can walk you through it if you need help. Just don't ask me about other distros...:)

/me wishes he had more money for another processor...... sniff

This ought to really motivate you to switch - I turned off everything GUI-related and started the client from a display physically connect to the box. Here are my last 4 frames:

Code:
[19:46:18] Completed 52500 out of 250000 steps (21%)
[20:16:18] Completed 55000 out of 250000 steps (22%)
[20:46:21] Completed 57500 out of 250000 steps (23%)
[21:16:27] Completed 60000 out of 250000 steps (24%)
[21:46:32] Completed 62500 out of 250000 steps (25%)

So it shaved another 10 seconds off of my frame times +/-. It will be interesting to see if this holds. I don't know what this means from a ppd perspective. This box crashed a couple of times today. I gave it a little more vcore to hopefully stabilize it. It is so close....
