All USB connections not responding HELP!!!

I started getting little error messages when I booted Windows XP Pro ("could not start Winsomethingor other, Dantz Retrospect could not find xxxxx, etc). I used system restore and reverted to a point earlier today. It then seemed to reboot normally until windows got to the sign-in screen. Then I saw that my mouse and keyboard (logitech wireless USB models) would not respond. I plugged in a wired USB mouse (Razer Diamondback) and a wired keyboard, rebooted and the same thing happened. I cannot sign into windows. I rebooted in safe mode, but mouse and keyboard still do not respond. I know that the mobo is seeing the keyboard because I can access and move around in the BIOS, and get into safe mode (F8). I tried plugging in the wired keyboard and mouse thru adapters into the legacy mouse and keyboard connectors, but no luck with that either. I have not installed or uninstalled any drivers or programs prior to these problems beginning.

It seems that Windows cannot detect peripherals plugged into a USB connection.
Any ideas? I am dead in the water.

System info:
XP Pro (SP2)
AMD 64 3500+
Asus A8V Deluxe rev2
2x 200GB Seagate HDD in RAID 1 (onboard VIA controller)
2x 512MB Corsair 3200C2PT RAM
 
how can i install my chipset drivers if i can't log onto my pc?
can they be made part of a boot up disk?
 
i did plug keyboard and mouse into the PS2 connectors thru adapters. does it make a difference if they are not "PS2 native"?

Does the keyboard respond at the POST screen and disable during windows bootup?
 
i cannot get any error messages until windows finishes booting up.
it can't finish booting until i log on.
i can't log on because keyboards and mice do not respond.
the keyboard does respond at the POST screen. it seems to disable during windows bootup.

Which makes me think even more it's a chipset driver issue. It might make a difference if they use adapters...try a regular PS/2 combo.

Agreed, swap the keyboard.
 
I replaced the keyboard and mouse with PS2 versions. Still no response in Windows. At this point, Windows does not seem to see either USB or PS2 input devices.

yes, i checked that. i am almost thinking that i need to do a fresh install.
so much for system restore.

It's not windows if the keyboard isn't working during POST. I already said this is a hardware issue, not an OS/software problem.

No keyboard at post=bad: keyboard, adapter, connector on the mobo.

We have swapped keyboards (and thus adapter by using a ps/2 keyboard) so that leaves the mobo. Reset the BIOS vis the jumper on the mobo. If this fails, your mobo is likely bad.

What caused all this?

I said that the keyboard did work during the post. Stopped during windows boot.

I reinstalled windows and everything seems to be working fine now.

What started all this is summed up in the first post.

Appreciate everyone's help with all this.
 
Grr, read that wrong as didn't work at post. Sorry about that, glad it's working now.
