Some analysts believe that the recent Universal announcement that it would no longer be exclusive to iTunes might hurt in online sales, but will probably not hurt sales of iPods whatsoever.

That is what happened last week when the Universal Music Group let Apple know that it would no longer grant the company guaranteed access to its coming releases. Officially, Universal had no comment, but an executive briefed on the negotiations said the music company was merely interested in keeping its options open as it does with most other retailers in the brick-and-mortar world.

For those who don't know: This is the same Universal that conned Microsoft to pay them device royalties for every Zune sold, weather or not it had any of Universal's music on it or not. More than likely they tried to do the same thing with Apple and the Ipod, and Apple rightly told them to STFU. I don't expect this to last very long, more than likely this is just a bluff to see if Apple will pay up, but it looks like Apple ain't stupid, and Universal's plan is going to backfire.

It can also backfire for Apple. I have the feeling they are pulling the same tricks on Apple as they did to MS.
