So I went ahead and started on my quest for an eyefinity setup right after the 5870 review was posted here on the [H]. I just recently found another one of my screens(were sold out forever) and now I'm finally down to the graphics card. I have 3 1080p screens and had always planned on going top end until the prices jumped $100 over msrp.

After the massive price jump on the 5970 (should have bit at $629 right away) I decided to wait for fermi to come and rescue me by lowering the prices of ati's cards. That was pretty foolish beings they just adjusted their prices to match ati's price/performance gaps...

So here I sit 8 months after release forced to pay >10% over msrp with 6800 series looking to come early this fall...

I have 2 routes in mind but I would like people with 5800 series experience to comment.

1. Buy a 5850 and just lower settings in game to still use eyefinity. I only plan on playing bf bc2, dirt 2, and nfs shift.

2. Save the money and sit on the screens until the next line comes out and get it at msrp

Tought decision. i wish I had eyefinity but 2 5770s cant do eyefinity in crossfire, neither do i have 3 monitors. But. to answer your question.

I say either 5870, or wait. Dont get a 5850. How close is the release date for the new cards? that have to come out? what card do you have now?

i say its smarter to just buy the brand new one when it comes out, this way you will be loved by all the forum members, you will have something faster than a 5870. And it will run all games you want lol. plus its the latest and greatest.

i really see very little reason to assume that the prices will come down. even if the 6800 cards appear anytime soon, they will no doubt also carry a hefty pricetag. the 5800 series will just become fazed out by the newer cards, but i hardly see prices going down that much. if it was 2 months then id say fine wait. but do you really want to waste all the money and time youve already gone through? you could always just pick up a 5870 and call it a day. at least then youd be able to play with decent settings. on the other hand 10% over msrp on the 5970 doesnt seem all that bad to me. if you plan on waiting for the next line to come out, you might also be over presumptuous assuming that they will be selling at msrp.

I thought the upcoming cards were simply refreshes? Nothing great from 5xxx to 6xxx?

For me at least, I can't wait for 6xxx series because I can hopefully pick up one or two more 5850's for cheaper.

Eyefinity + Crossfire has been supported for a while now.

@OP: You can get a 5870 for $390, which is only $10 more than the online price at launch. That is what I'd go with.

Thanks for the quick input. I've been toying with the thought of a 5870 but just have not been able to commit. I guess I was just too spoiled by ati undercutting nvidia with the 4800 series that I got a bit ahead of myself with this one.

I'll probably start monitoring the 5870 prices a bit closer this week and see if I can pick up a deal somewhere along the way.

If you plan on playing BFBC2 on Eyefinity you better get yourself a 5870. Its a very demanding game. It also loves quad core processors.

Here is my video of me playing BFBC2 in Eyefinity http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KuG48HHlYTQ I also have some other videos there you can check out. I love my 5870 it rocks.

Nice, but I have the same settings on my 5850, and it runs fine.

Here's a video i made of mine. There's quite a few different games (HL2, BC2, UT3, Grid, and others)

I can tell you with my setup + 5870. Im playing 3x1 6048x1080 with medium settings and getting 30-60 FPS in BFBC2.

I seriously suggest going 5870 minimum.

I got my XFX 5870 for $360 ABCB at tigerdirect.
