Damn it, Intel is so selfish.

All Motherboards that are avaivalbe on the retail markets dont support Conroe at all.

The performance of Conroe is great.

But when it comes to the market,You have to change your MB too.

Goddamnit.
 
Selfish? Tell that to the electrical engineers who are constantly told to do the impossible at Intel, AMD, ATi, NVIDIA, etc. Conroe marks the beginning of a new architecture from Intel, with some borrowed elements from previous designs. AMD's K8 platform wasn't supported on K7 motherboards, generally. You would be naive to assume that Intel would bring compatibility to existing motherboards either.

K8 and k7 are totally different.

But Conroe have the same bus standard as Pentium 4/D.

That is why the future 975x and 965P not only support Conroe but also Support Pentium4/D.

Does k8 MB support K7 too?

That's not all it takes to support a CPU. The Conroe platform has different power specifications, for one. Do you really think that "selfishness" over a handful of enthusiast motherboards is what's driving this unfortunate situation?

The 304 revision and past of the Intel 975X Badaxe board supports Conroe. There is an errata document on Intel's site that states R304 added "ten capacitors" and "support for future CPUs." What else would that be than Conroe?
 
some places say that the i975x supports conroe, however there are plenty more people who say that it doesn't, and some that say it need a few "modifications"

I'm not talking about the chipset. I'm talking about the power supply section near the CPU, which must be fine tuned for the Conroe's power envelope. Also, the Conroe, like any new CPU, needs a special clock generator circuit, which varies from motherboard to motherboard, core to core. These factors fall outside the scope of the chipset's feature set.
 
im not upset that intel doesn't use current gen motherboards, i just dont like some place reporting that conroe does work on current gen boads.get teh story right

Agreed. If you bought a 975 board for Pressler, with the *hope* of Conroe support, no biggie. But if you bought a 975 with the *expectation* of Conroe working on it, and it comes to pass that Conroe won't work on it, oh well.

The problem, as far as I can tell, is the lower limits of voltage (from reading the billion Conroe threads out there).
 
I just find it strange that these boards dont do it. I remember my 754 boards doing as low as 0.8v just fine and 2.11v (not that you'd want to do 2.11v for very long.) DFI 939 boards seem to bottom out at 1.005v or so. I know AMD boards are different than intel boards, I just dont know why the board wouldnt be able to tighten its voltage...
 
It's simple. Intel is in the hardware business. Why make a new processor that will work with old motherboards when they can sell a new motherboard with every new processor? I'm sure there's some technicial reason or excuse for it, but you're right... there shouldn't be. :p

Yep, it would be dumb, business-wise, to let users have a long upgrade path when they can get us to buy new chipsets every so often along with the CPU.

Same reason for the push to PCI-E from ATI and NVIDIA, who just so happen to make the most popular chipsets for AMD desktops.

965P and Future 975x that support Conroe dont need another PCB in order to support Pentium 4/D.

What Asrock did just plug a "MB" into another one nothing more.

Conroe and P4/Pentium D share the same Socket-LGA 775 and the same Bus standard and the power loss of Conroe is much less than Prescott and Cedarmill so it is no reason that Old MB cant support Conroe if Intel is not so selfish.

Like amd, if you have Socket 939 NF4 MB,you can support all socket 939 CPU including Dual core.

All your doing is blindly speculating what they are capable of. How about you let their engineers decide that. When current motherboard's were designed and created, the specifications for Conroe were unknown, how can anyone expect them to be able to support a new microarchitecture on a platform that wasn't designed for it.

AMD != Intel

Like many here have already said. A new microarchitecture? I would fully expect to need a chipset upgrade.

The chipsets upgrade is no need at all.

The 975x/955x/945/NF4 IE series support Conroe For Sure.

But I talk about Chipsets instead of MB.

It is all about VRM standard.

Now most of MB are VRM 9 and Some are VRM 10.x.

But Conroe need VRM11.
 
thats why i hate intel, they always release to many motherbards, you needed to get a new one for the extreme edition, a new one for the dual core... with amd, just get a socket 939 mobo and it supports everything!!!

Conroe is radically different on the power requirements. Just because the current chipsets support Conroe's architecture does not mean the current boards (based on the current power systems) support the new power systems. Chipset != Motherboard.

Unlike the AMD systems, Intels budget chips can work in the same boards as their P4D chips.... whereas AMD requires 754 or 939.
 
I am impressed how a simple "Current Intel Mobo's do not support Conroe" thread gets turned into Intel vs. AMD in less than 2 posts. Congratulations guys.

Anyway, I am not surprised that Intel will make you buy another new mobo when conroe comes out. I take pity on people who did not foresee this.
 
Also, if and when I buy a Conroe motherboard, I know it will work. That's not something I can necessarily say for my NForce4 board :p

I don't get why people are suprised at this, it's an entire new processor line.

Doesn't anyone remember the tualatin processors and the new motherboards needed for that? Much less difference in processors that this and they require a new motherboard.

If the go AM2, they'll need another motherboard as well. Many of said i975 wouldn't be compatible right from the start and didn't bother missing with it or 955X. But, I much rather have different boards than boards getting buggy from trying to support too many different lines of Processors.

Tualatin dont need a new Motherboard.

You can use some kind of cards to fix the problem.

So the oldest BX Mohterboards like ASUS P2B can support Tualatin as well.

This isn't the first time that Intel has changed the socket without changing the socket. Anyone remember PPGA vs FC-PGA? Same socket, different pinout. Not saying that the conroe is a different pinout... but it wouldn't surprise me if some of the signal paths are different.

But the P2B was a slot one and you could use an adapter to support the lower voltages. For Socket 370, most motherboards didn't support the lower voltages.

Aweeee but you're forgetting, there is also a core change. Intel also added Socket 771 to support the Xeon versions.

Hey Jason I agree, I was here be-yotching about I975X not being compatible! I'm told Intel has been playing with some form of Conroe before i975 went on sale, they should have FIXED or change it before they shipped it. It sucks and I make no bones/excuses about it!
I told guys here I was waiting on i965 right from the start.
 
Yep Intel has a strange upgrade policy.

New procs require new mobos , but new mobos support all the previous procs and I do mean all.

Old Socket 370 motherboards like ASUS CUSL2 also can use an adapter to support different Voltages and let them support Tualatin.
