edit-

when I use dvi output to lcd monitor, no banding.

when i use hdmi output from laptop, i get banding. color is set at highest 32bit.
decreasing contrast doesnt eliminate bands.

i thought hdmi and dvi output was supposed to be identical.
in this case, they are not. hdmi looks shittier than dvi

wtf ?

I have Acer H223HQEbmid and that gradient is totally smooth. On top of that it shows all black boxes in black test. Light grey too is really good.

i think my laptop's hdmi output is fucked up.
i tried turning contrast all the way down, but via hdmi, banding still exists.

When i connect the monitor to my desktop's dvi output, the gradient is pretty smooth.

Your HDMI out may be using YUV levels (16-240) instead of the normal RGB (0-255). Not sure why. Try running in a "non-HD" resolution. Some monitors interpret any signal over HDMI at 1080P or 720P as a HDTV input (like BlueRay, or STB, etc), so try a different resolution as well.

As a general technical note; TN panels achieve visually smooth gradients through Hi-FRC advanced dithering; you should only see distinct banding on poor monitors or in extreme contrast.

there's def something wonky with the nvidia driver, or the way it handles dual monitors.

my laptop has 1366x768 native rez. When i extend the desktop to the 23" monitor, the 23" shows banding at 1920x1080.

If i duplicate my laptop screen onto the monitor, or set the extended desktop to 1366x768 so that i have two 1366x screens, there is no banding.
At any other resolution larger or smaller, there is banding.

i don't get it. text is sharp on the extended desktop when running in 1080p mode. but gradients are not smooth.
