Remember those cool wraparound monitors from CES 2008, where NEC and Alienware supposedly had them coming out down the line? I remember seeing one on sale once for like $8k, which is totally ridiculous. What ever happened to those? Were they phased out due to LCD/LED coming down the pipe? Those were a way cooler setup than eyefinity/multiple monitor setups IMO, just because there is no breaks between screens. Are any of them still going to be in production so that they might actually be purchased at a reasonable price? I am guessing these products are dead, but if anybody is in the know, that would be cool.

They've popped up here and there, including an eyefinity setup at CES just recently. These days they've been branded with the Ostendo name, which I think is the OEM. They still cost $6500 and still have pretty low vertical resoluion. I don't think those would change much with mass production, it looks like each monitor has at least three projectors inside it which probably need to be individually calibrated.

It's a bit technical, but the other problem is that games are programmed to expect a flat screen, and will display graphics that are perspective-correct for a flat screen. Even if you increase the Field-Of-View like crazy, the game is still performing the same perspective projection calculations. Displaying game content on a curved screen will inevitably result in distortion, especially towards the edges of the display.

I honestly don't think these will ever "take off". Maybe we'll get a flexible OLED panel shaped into a curve someday which would be a lot thinner...

Yea a flexible LED panel of some sort would be cool. The one thing that turns me off of most eyefinity setups is that you can see the screen breaks between them. But that is just my opinion I guess. Maybe one day somebody will come out with one that is seamless.

You can buy one, but they're stupid expensive. Somewhere between $2000 and $3000 each if I remember correctly.

Thats what we all want, but most people have said they got used to the bezels there and it wasnt such a big problem.

EDIT: The biggest drawback for these caured displays for me, is the resolution. The size of the screen i could handle but not the resolution.

You can buy them. A good friend of mine works for a bio tech company and for some reason they purchased one about 8 months ago. It did come with a very hefty price tag.

until you've tried it dont knock it - the break are like looking out a window and they really do disappear when you are gaming...

you have to stop and refocus on them to even see them... its like looking through the panes of a window as cars drive past... you dont notice the panes... you just take in the scenery beyond

that's how surround gaming works... be it eyefinity or however its implemented
