I was just using it normally, I've had it since August '06. And it just abruptly shut off. And a smell of burning emanated form it. So I'm assuming it's the PS because no lights come on when it's plugged in; like I would expect the "charging light" to come on if anything else died--though maybe the motherboard?
Anyways, I'm wondering if there is anything I can do? Anyway I could fix it? (I did a quick search for a ps and didn't find anything.) Or get a few bucks out of it.
Or other ideas?

Thanks
ZJK

Is the smell coming from the laptop itself or from the power brick? If it's coming from the laptop, the motherboard is dead.

It's coming from inside the computer. How can you be sure it's the mb not the ps? Oh wait, lappies don't have internal power supplies? durr. Okay.

So do you think it's worth buying a new mother board?

If I bought a new computer, I'd only need one just as powerful not more.

Well, what are the specs of the laptop? Chances are it's not worth repairing it unless it's a newer model. Do you want to stick with a laptop or are you willing to go with a desktop (which will cost you less money for better performance but won't be portable)? In any case, if you're looking to buy a new computer, you should post a thread in the General Hardware section of this forum and ask any questions you might have over there.
