Ok so I've found that the Alienware Graphics Amplifer is connected via PCIe 3.0 4x. If the laptop has a GTX 980M, what video card can I put in the Graphics Amplifer that will still outperform the 980M when running at PCIe 3.0 4x?

PCIe 3.0 4x shouldn't really hamstring a card's performance. There is an article on PCIe speeds on [H]ardocp. I'll try and dig it up. So pick something that is significantly faster than a 980M.

Here is 2.0 vs 3.0.

Thought there was another article on 16x vs 8x vs 4x.. Let me look a little more. ;)

Does a GTX970 at PCIe 3.0 4x perform better than the 980M at 3.0 16x?

According to notebookcheck, the GTX 970 is about 22% faster, maybe a couple % lower if you figure a small amount slower with the 4x vs 16x. But then again, that's assuming your 980m isn't throttling either, which Alienware laptop do you have?

I have the 17R2 and have the 330W AC adapter (the 17R2 would throttle w/ the stock 180W AC adapter).

Well, budget couldn't stretch for a 980TI so ended up getting a GTX970. Still on the way so I haven't had a chance to try it yet. Hopefully it performs close to on-par with the GTX980M.
