Was an "official" thread for A:I ever created in here? I can't find one, which seems very odd for such an anticipated AAA release. Has everything that can be said about it already been said?

Yeah, I saw that thread, but it's in the general gaming section. No one has anything to say about the PC version, like bugs, idiosyncrasies, superior/inferior experience, mods, DLC, price versus value, etc.?

I think it's safe to say that most discussion about a multiplat on this forum in the general gaming section is going to be about the PC version, even if no platform is specifically mentioned. It's also safe to say that if there isn't anything or a lot negative being said then there are no big issues.

I don't know if this game was highly anticipated, but there was certainly cautious optimism up to its release.

I'm saving it for the Oculus Rift release to get the full scaryness.

There's a guy that's floating around here that's been playing it on that and said the immersion was insane.

Yeah, he was what made me realise I need that!
Seeing as I'm getting OR, might as well line up some good things to play.
Although I am a bit worried about Elite Dangerous because you can play it all day every day for ever!
I'm going to get Rift face lol.

I'm up to Chapter 6...fantastic game so far...yeah the Alien AI can be a bit too good but once you understand the mechanics and tools at your disposal the game is a hell of a lot of fun...they nailed the Alien 1 vibe and atmosphere...and the sound is first rate as well

That's me, I've got a DK1 and DK2.

It's nuts, it's amazing, it's great. Get some great headphones, DO NOT USE SPEAKERS, hack the .xml files (full support is there, they just disabled it in menus), turn off lights, crap pants. Lean in, lean out works, lean left, lean right works. Full 3d, full everything, it's crazy. This is beyond a tech demo for the rift, it's the magical game to sell it.

But that all said, it's a fucking nightmare to get working. This is the case with most Oculus stuff right now. So unless you are really fucking comfortable fucking around in .xml files and tweaking things, prepare for cursing god to get most actual games working. There are multiple Oculus modes that some games are picking about, and then depending on your monitor configuration that might throw another wrench into it.

The game is Oculus ready, and godly. The Rift is sadly not all that friendly, but when it works it's worth every fucking cent.

Aw feck, I've got a killer sound system so havent bought any headphones, I can see the need though.
One more toy to buy when OR comes out.
Cheers for your wisdom.

The sound design is stellar in this and I can assure you: Life and death hangs by sound in this game.

Gotcha, thanks.
I've got to decide on headphones, lots of research.
(might as well use them for music too)

I get the same feedback from a good friend with a lowly DK1 and its low res panel playing A:I -- that its g.d. amazing. I can't wait to start playing titles like this with the first consumer version, that incorporates the Crystal Cove changes and whatever other enhancements they're working on on that road to perfection singularity.

Meanwhile GPU's are continuing to get more powerful, so we're within a threshold of only a few more years until people start having heart attacks while jacked in, and the first wrongful death suits against Oculus VR commencing along with new activist organizations like Mothers Against VR. Enter Facebook's army of lawyers.

hey guys, pardon my ignorance

is this game strictly single player...or is there any co-op option at all?

As much as I loved growing up watching the movies with my dad, I think this game is boring.

I liked Outlast and Amnesia, this one just doesn't do it for me. sad face

I am actually holding out on playing this game because I want to experience it 100% with Oculus when it finally gets released. It definetly seems like a game tailor-made for it. Though I am a huge Alien fan so I do not know if I can hold on for so long... :)

****SPOILER I GUESS****

Do not wait. IF any alien game actually deserved $50 its this one. Been a HUGE alien fan since I was little, and this was perfect for.

Actually scared the hell outta my sister while she was watching. I was shocked to find out the Alien can actually crawl in the vents to come after you...Nice touch!

Aw man, you should use spoiler tags.

Aw man, you should use spoiler tags.

I didn't think crawling int he vents should be a spoiler? I mean its an alien chasing you...You would somewhat expect that?

Sorry I didn't use it. Thought it was common knowledge LOL

this is without question the best Alien game I've ever played...they nailed it...I can understand why some people would not like the gameplay but for hard core Alien fans this is the real deal

THIS GAME IS FUCKING AMAZING!

I swear to god, with my 7.1 surround setup it's like stepping INTO THE FUCKING MOVIE. The ambiance is fucking unreal, the attention to detail is INSANE. Everything from the monochrome flickering CRTs to the tiny blips and beeps from various computer terminals to the constant ticking of an old 70s printer. The first 30 minutes blew me away.

Just got to the part where you have your first true encounter with the alien. Was on the edge of my seat and realized I was gripping my mouse extremely tight haha.

First game to truly nail the feel of the Alien universe.

This game has me in "pants-wetting" mode a good portion of the time. Playing with the lights off and my headset is just horrifying.

Haven't been this bothered by a game since Clive Barker's Undying.

You also should've *SPOILER* tagged that there was an Alien in the game. I mean WTF bro?

So far the only part im disliking is the area with all the *SPOILERS?* *SPOILERS?**SPOILERS?**SPOILERS?* androids, throws the pacing of the game off a bit, feels like I am playing metal gear solid or something.

This is only quasi game related, but I was wondering about something pertaining to the story developed for A:I. Maybe someone here can answer without giving too much away.

(Be warned - I'm a HUGE Alien nerd, so, well, yeah.)

In the movie, the Nostromo's computer wakes the crew in the vicinity of Zeta II Reticuli as they were on their return leg to Earth (or at least somewhere in the solar system). Once Lambert determines their position, she despondently wonders why they were awakened in such a remote part of the galaxy (or words to that effect). The implication being that they were well outside the range of any sort of civilization. This is why no one thought it useful to send out a distress call once the xeno erupted from Kane.

Now, it appears that Seegson has constructed a gargantuan cathederal-style space station in this same remote area (Sevastopol). Is there a plausible explanation given for the Sevastopol's remote location and far-too-coincidental appearance so near to LV-426? How many years later does this take place after the Nostromo and her refinery's destruction? And how did Seegson (and not Weyland-Yutani) recover the Nostromo's flight recorder?

These are perhaps just story niggles, but I was curious.

There are logs and computer entries you can read about the history of Sevastopol and why it is where it is. They describe why the station was built in a remote area, and explain its current state. Anesidora, a commercial vessel, finds the flight recorder and takes it to Sevastopol.

The story isn't amazingly written or anything, but it is solid, which is more than can be said about basically any other Alien universe game yet released. It even goes so far as to sow up a plot hole or two from the films. :)

Thanks, CS. I'm glad these story elements have been addressed. It's always bothered me how "populated" the LV-426 system became after Alien when it was explicitly stated that Z2R was well outside any semblance of civilization. I never fully bought Cameron's W-Y conspiracy-angled plot and thought it stretched credibility enormously to have a full-fledged colony built on the very same planetoid just to harvest the xeno, particularly since it also required an enormous terraforming venture.

I know it looks like no one really wants to talk about this utterly fantastic game, but I have to gush a little and get this out of my system.

Played the Last Survivor DLC and was terrified the entire time. I haven't experienced this sort of visceral fright since, well, maybe never. The creepiest parts of STALKER are the closest I've come, but even that stellar title's scares are dwarfed by LS.

There are only two aspects about LS that bothered me given Creative Assembly's painstaking attention to detail to Alien.

The first being that the xeno hung Lambert's body in the film, presumably on a hook Texas Chainsaw Massacre style. In LS, her body is placed atop some storage crates. Not a terrible oversight, but noticeable.

The second change is EXTREMELY divergent. That being that you don't have a final showdown with the xeno inside the Narcissus. Once you set the engines to detonate, all you have to do is reach the shuttlecraft and you "win" the game. For that matter, you're not required to backtrack to try to cancel the detonation when Ripley discovers the xeno is between her and the only path to the lifeboat.

(Oh, and Jones the Cat is completely missing. I guess modeling and animating a common house feline wasn't in the budget.)
These are odd omissions given how crucial they were to the finale of Alien.

I haven't played Crew Expendable yet, so I don't know how it plays out. But, I was DAMNED impressed with LS, the story changes notwithstanding.

I can only imagine how terrifying it is to play this using an OR. The immersion must be coronary-inducing.

I was enjoying the game up until the first encounter with armed humans when I discovered the game doesn't allow me to pick up their guns after I kill them. That's just stupid. No reason for it other than to make the game artificially hard.

I'm not too far in, but the droids freak me out more than the alien does. lol

Are you guys paying with a controller or mouse and keyboard? I kinda thought about giving this game another try with the controller to see if I could get into it.

I use controller and it's great. I did try mouse/keyboard and it seemed fine as well, you just lose some fidelity with sneaking or leaning.

Btw the game really looks awesome at 144hz/144fps on the ROG Swift :)

Well, I know no one wants to talk about this game in here (for some reason), but I have to vent/gush. This is on hard difficulty.

I'm nearing the part of the game where you have to retrieve a trauma kit for Nina, who was injured during the initial EVA crossing with Samuels. I've come to the sad realization that I would've been a poor substitute for Ellen Ripley in the first movie, as I've been killed at least a hundred times by the xeno. However, I have noticed some conceits the game implements in the interest of gameplay.

For one, while the alien seems to have excellent hearing wrt footsteps, it seems completely oblivious to doors. I can't tell you how many times I've ducked into a closet and the alien, despite being only ten feet away, not investigating the sound of me quickly opening and closing said closet door (which is REALLY loud). For that matter, it also doesn't notice when I exit closets.

Secondly, the mechanic of harming yourself while holding your breath seems...far-fetched. This implies you can actually die from breath holding, which I don't think is biologically possible, as you'd probably pass out long before cell death started to occur. It would've been better to implement a breath hold timer of some sort, which would be depenedent on prior physical exertion, emotional state, etc.

It seems odd that the alien would put its face right up against a closet grill and just gaze at you. If it has THAT much interest, you'd think it would just go all the way and open the door.

The advice to not run is somewhat overrated, even on hard. I've quickly peeked around a corner, caught sight of the alien, and sprinted towards the nearest hiding spot many times while surviving. I agree that it's better to sneak when possible, but if you do encounter the alien and there's no other option, try running towards the closest closet, desk, etc.

So far, practically every human and Working Joe I've seen have been hostile. If you're backed into a corner, go ahead and fight. However, it's fairly easy to run away from WJs since they have no ranged weapons and can only perform a fast-walk. Whatever you do, though, don't try to melee with a WJ, as they can take a LOT of abuse and are android-strong.

Don't hoarde. There're plenty of supplies along your journey, so craft away. I can't begin to tell you how much stuff I've had to abandon because my inventory for that particular item was full.

I agree with others that the game starts to hit its stride after the first terrifying close-call with the alien, so stick with it. During those parts of the game where the alien is actively searching for you will be nail-biting. The creeptastic sound design will have you on permanent edge as you hear the alien moving through areas by way of vents, rooms, and hallways. Along with painstakingly recreating Ron Cobb's interiors and Moebius' suit designs, Creative Assembly also did a wonderful job of modeling the alien, with all sorts of Giger-esque detail.

And make no mistake that, despite the alien's size, it is super fast and mind-bendingly agile.

Those are my thoughts. Anyone else have any observations?
