i get substantial discounts on AKG headphones...unfortunetely the highest line im offered is the K-242HD and the K-272HD.

it looks like the primary differences between these two are that the 242s are semi-open and the 272s are closed.

has anyone used any of these phones before? any comments?

the price difference between the two is like $10 - so i guess it's probably going to come down to whether i want open or closed - and from the specs it doesn't look like audio quality differences are very great...

i'll probably lean towards the 272s - but open to any input.

im really upset that they dont have detachable cords, though...meh.

The K271 Mk2 includes velour and pleather pads, and a straight and a coiled cable that is removable cable. The K272HD has only velour pads and a non-removable cable.

Same with the K240 Mk2/K242.

If you can get the K240/K271 for the same/similar price, then I think I'd rather get one of those two.

I tried both of them for a short time at a music store. I didn't spend much time on the K241, since it sounded a little odd to my ears with it's (semi)-open design, and there was a lot of background noise. The K271 was fairly neutral, with perhaps forward mids. Violins sing easily. Didn't get to test them on bass or highs.

thanks.
i dont think there's anyway i could find even the K271 mk2s for the price i can get the 272hd's new.
it's harman employee discount
