Air filtering in a QPack

Hey all,

I've seen a few people who've taken their Q-Packs to the next level in cleanliness. I must say that I think this is something I need to do for my new build. I'd like to install air filters to keep as much dirt and dust out of my system.

Living in Boston right on a main street, I get a LOT of dirty air from car pollution and just general dust / dirt in the air. Even when I will be using the a/c, the air is still dirty. (I am a clean freak!) You should see what comes out of my PC now when I clean it. Dust and dirt everywhere.

At any rate, does anyone use air filters? I saw on one person's QPack where they reversed the case fan and put a filter on that, so that the case fan blew in air that passed through the filter. In terms of air flow, I don't see this being good. My power supply (Enermax Liberty) puts out a decent amount of air, and I just think that having a case fan blowing in while a PSU is blowing out is just not efficient. And I'm not going to reverse the PSU fan because 1.) I'd probably break something and 2.) I don't want that hot PSU air blowing on my video card.

So what I am thinking is somehow, I need to install air filters on the side vents of the QPack near the front of the case where most of the air will be coming in. I'm assuming that they don't make air filters for this, cuz I haven't found any.

So my question is has anyone modded their case to use air filters in this location, or does anyone have any suggestions?

Thanks guys~

if you Really want clean build a seperate box 12" X 12" x 6" and on one side put a HOME air filter

than using 2 seperate 3" ducts (1 to the CPU and 1 to the case intake)

You could probably put the filter box under your desk and run the duct up (through the desk to the comp)

It would be very clean and cool air would be brought to the CPU also.

PS if ur insane about clean use a HEPA filter.

The little filters that come with fans are nothing more than a decoration.

Hmm that sounds a little out of my scope. Also don't really want to build something else that's going to have to be attached to the QPack cuz the reason I am building the QPack is for space and moving reasons. But I appreciate your response and it would probably work a lot better than what I'm trying to do hah.

Try using bounce dryer sheets for your filtering material. Smells good too!

Alternatively clean out your PC once a week. wont take long with the qpack. Just spray it out with air duster.

I know what you go through when you have to clean your case and getting all the dust out of it. Probably found in the kitchen or cleaning products section of Stop & Shop are those green scrub pads (like the ones on top of some sponges). They worked for me in the front of my Antec SOHO case when I had two intake fans going. Cleaning it was as easy at running it under some water to get the dust conglomerates out. It might me overkill but I can tell you that it was the cleanest my case had ever been when I did use the front intake fans. The best part was was that I never had to replace them, only take then out every so often for cleaning. You might have some trouble getting it to fit under the fan's grill but I'm sure you'll think of something, I know i did and it was worth it.

What do the majority of people do? Turn their exhaust fans into an intake?

Would doing so with the exhaust fan be efficient when the PSU is going from inside air --> exhaust? Fans would be counteracting each other and not providing enough flow?

It seems MUCH easier to switch my exhaust fan into an intake and put a filter on that, rather than try to custom build two filters to put on the side air ducts at the front of the case.

Anyone mind sharing their setups?

You can buy filter material at just about any hardware store. I've cut it to size and attached it to the two side vents and the front vent under the handle. It works well and just needs to be vacuumed out every other month or so...

How did you attach it to the case? Did you build a bracket for it, or tape it, or something else?

I just taped them...I didn't see any point in making a fancy bracket since I don't need to remove the filters to clean them.
