air duct question

I have an old amd t-bird comp ( specs in sig) and i finally realized that i have to fix a problem after 2+ years of use. it seems like almost everytime i open the case the CPU area is always burning hot, hot enough to burn your fingers. So i need a really cheap ( free) ducting solution. Which ducting configuration do u guys think would be more effective?
1: Cut out a hole in the side panel and make a duct going to the heatsink. ( but this would only cool the heatsink, not the whole CPU area)

2: Make a duct going from the exhaust fan to the CPU area....( Would this screw up the air circulation in my case since i only have 2 80mm fans, one blowing and and one blowing out.)

opinion 1 and make test ducts out of cardboard to experiment with size. my guess would be that duct to the HS fan would be best, but easy to test and see.

yea definitly what I would do. That would bring cooler air right into the cpu fan, and should lower the temps. The air can be hot around the heatsink as long as its getting cool enough to lower your temps.

see now, it depends; is your Heatsink Fan blowing ONTO your heatsink? or is it sucking air up away?

personally, i prefer to have them suck air up away; but you should always try both to see which one happens to fit your particular case (pun intended ) better...therefore, i suggest (before cutting the case) to try reversing the fan on your HSF (just turn it upstand, and screw it back in, see if the temps drop).

if you're going to be cutting your case anyway, try cutting some blowhole vents up top (on the top part of your case) and around the area of your CPU (opposite the side the duct is coming in)

remember, 90degree bends kill flow, so don't have any in your duct if you can help it.

ok, right now im thinking about reversing my exhaust fan so that it blows air in and make a cardboard duct going from the fan to the heatsink area just like one of those air ducts that dell computers have.

all right, but i still urge you, try reversing the fan before you start doing any ducts, it could make a large difference...

weeel, it depends...according to this article (found in the Unofficial Official Tweak Guide in G[H], here: http://www.hardforum.com/showthread.php?t=785141) http://tweak3d.net/tweak/airflowtweak/ the fan should be sucking up; but, it varies from user to user.

Some systems just perform better w/ a fan blowing down, some w/ a fan sucking up; so try both and whichever works better, do!

update: ok i made a cheap looking cardboard duct and it works pretty well, but it seems to have disrupted the case's airflow by A LOT. so i will reverse the heatsink fan when i have time later on.
