Air-cooled Pelts

So far, I'm a strictly air guy, and I'd like to keep it that way. It's nice and simple for me. But I'd also like to try some of the more "extreme" cooling stuff -- while still sticking relatively close to air.

If I could make something (decently cheap) on my own to achieve my goal, I'd be very much pleased.

Firstly, I'd like to ask you all how this (http://www.frozencpu.com/cgi-bin/frozencpu/cpu-swi-06.html) heatsink performs with more modern processors, since the one review they have is compared to no other heatsinks and is pretty damned old.

Secondly, if that heatsink isn't much to write home to mom about, I'd like to know something about air-cooled TECs. More specificially, how to set such a thing up all by myself, without spending $100 dollars on a heatsink, or even more on a water cooling setup.

I already have a decent heatsink (Aerocool DP-102), and if it's posible to "mod" your pre-existing heatsink for such a setup, I'd be happy indeed.

Thanks for any [H]elp. <--*giggle*

from what I've heard, TEC coolers put out more heat than the heatsink on the other side can handle. I dont entirely believe that, and in fact intend to try out a setup using an air cooled TEC.

The best heatsink I know of ( for a reasonable price ) is the thermalright SP-97. It is about $50 at newegg.com and I own one. From there you would need a powerful fan, I'm planning on a 1' fan that does about 1000 CFM. You would probably do well with a 92mm vantec tornado, you would also probably need a power supply for the TEC.

Yeah, and on second thought.. you'd need a screw-down heatsink. My DP-102 is clip-on.

If I can get this to a reasonable price, I'll be all over this setup. I'd really like to try this out.

And the link to the heatsink I posted rules out the fact that a heatsink can't cool a 266 watt pelt. I've already got a tornado running, so it won't be any extra noise. (Less, since I actually have 2 CPU fans.)

Er.. 226.

Anyone know of a site other than FrozenCPU that sells 226 peltiers? I'm looking for lowest possible prices.

I run an air cooled tec on my vid card. It doesn't cool that much but it does the trick. In order to handle the heat I use a stock P4 heat sink with a 50 watt pelt and a 1/2" thick cold plate.

An air cooled pelt on a cpu could work but you will need a very big heat sink. Perhaps you could use a combination of several fans and 1 bigass sink.

To put things into perspective. I hooked up a 170 watt pelt to a 420 watt power supply. In 5 seconds the hot side of the pelt almost burned my finger. If an ath XP 2500 puts out 45 watts of heat then you must add the combined heat of the pelt and the proc together and then find a way to eliminate that much heat.

My advice is to toy around with the thing and see what you can do. Hold up on silicon and grease as air cooling won't allow you to get into the condensation range.

The heatsink I linked to is just an older MCX462 sitting atop a 226w pelt and a 1/2 in. copper cold plat. I've got a good feeling that a newer heatsink sitting under a 92mm tornado could take care of that even easier.

I'm not so sure, but I've just got a feeling.. it can be done. Air-cooled pelts are so possible.

As soon as I get my grubby hands on some cash, I think I'll be buying me some pelt stuff and an SP-97.

Hm.. have found some nice, cheap pelts over on eBay.

Now.. theoretically, what wattage do you think an SP-97 (or whatever you believe to be the best Socket A heatsink) can dissipate with a Tornado sitting on top of it?

If that old Swiftech sink could do 226, I'm guessing that an SP-97 should be able to handle a bit more, but I don't want to press my luck. Also, what would a decently thick copper cold plate run me?

Check www.onlinemetals.com, and www.dangerden.com I got my 1 copper cold plate and 3 aluminum cold plates from there(had to make a crazy riging), there not the cheapo 40mm ones either there 2 inches by 4 inches and .5 inches thick, with shipping and everything i think it ran me under 20. Smalles they offer is 2" by 2".

That 226W pelt is a beast though, probles I just ran into are power. My 350W PS cant run my 95W pelt at all, and the pelt is the only thing on it. I just bought a Cosel 12 Volt 13 Amp Power Supply off ebay for 25ish. Your gonna need to do over 20 amps i think for that one, and something like that will cost you ofer 100 new easy, unless you can get a good deal off ebay which is what i would recomend.

With heat disapation you're gonna have to do some math that at 10am I have no urge to even look at. But dont only take into consideration the amount of heat the pelt gives off, but also add the amount your cpu will give off. This can be done on air thoug, this is a review of a pelt power supply but the pelt he uses is the 226W one, and he cools it with the swiftech heatsink and fan. http://www.pcextreme.net/samlex_america_320_1.php

If you go purely by the numbers, the MCX462-T will put you at 8C with an 80mm Vantec Tornado at full speed with a 226W thermoelectric cooler, assuming you can keep the case temperature at 20C.

The heatsink itself will be around 94C so if you touch it long enough you will get burned.

But oh yeah.

Well-done watercooling with the 226W TEC will get the chip to -15C (purely by the numbers).
