I am hooking up a PC at my parents office for them ( 1700+ 512 ram 120 gig drive , xp pro) and adding a wireless network to there DSL out there. anyways I set up the wep and everything and connect to the Netgear Wireless B Via a Gigafast USB wireless B adapter. Well it connects fine and every about 4-5 minutes the signal slowly dies down until no signal then it gets signal again. It always stays connected but IE wont connect to a web page. I tried to run the small office networking wizard and says it cannot complete because of a error, i can try a different choices. Would installing SP2 on this help at all? any other suggestions?

I would certainly install SP2 at any rate. Gotta take care of your Parents on the network. ;)

gl :)

Its in a seperate room the whole point of wireless was so we wouldnt need the cord:) he just browses ebay haha

with the post i just sent u there are no wires go to that link it plugs into the wall and when the othere ones plugged in it gets the signle and throws it out and since it will be closer to the pc it should work perfectly

why would you need a wireless when he's only 15 feet away? Cable cant be run around the edge of the room? Is it a laptop that he wants to move around with or a stationary pc?
Note: cable is safer - more "hack proof" from those who are "drive by hacking" - and cheaper (30 ft of cable vs router and adapter)
Ok move the router - move the antenna on the pc (if possible)
if still no go - you might have something set wrong on the wireless - you might have a bad wireless adapter or router - take them back & replace -
I had a wireless b netgear on one side of the house upstairs in the office and could get the full 11mb/s in the far bedroom. (one hall, the 20ft wide family room, the 20ft wide kitchen, another hall, the laundry room, and 15 foot higher)

Everything is already bought. It seems like the connection is staying stable now, I just can't get on IE. When I try to run through the wizard it still says cannot complete due toe rror bla bla bla. This is still on SP1, does SP2 fix this?

Not sure if it'll fix the problem, but SP2 certainly wouldn't hurt. I'd update, and see if it works.

The exact reason I decided to run a wire from my room to my basement. I couldn't take the wireless internet dropping my connection when it wasn't in heavy use. The only times I would stay fully connected was when I was listening to music streams off of the web. Other then that the connection couldn't handle an MSN transfer or anything. Trust me dude, if you can't get it fixed, just run a cable, it saved me at least 3 weeks of hastle.

First off, Wireless sucks. Well, I guess there isn't really a second point, it just sucks.

-Any stray signal on the same frequency as your network will disrupt the link and cause your connection to drop.

-Wireless is a huge security hole in your network. WEP is crap as any script kiddy can sit outside your house and run a program to bypass the encryption. MAC filtering offers only the most basic of protection but is easily bypassed. Disabling SSID broadcast only turns off one of three anouncements of your networks existence.

-Windows management of a wireless connection will drive you insane. For no damn reason at all, Windows will just drop the connection only to reconnect a few seconds later. Disable Wireless Zero Configuration in services and use the Third-Party Wireless Utility that came with the card.

Honestly, if your 15 ft away from the router, save yourself some headaches and just run a piece of cat 5.
