Ok so here is the deal. My DD boxen hates me with a passion and I have tried everything I can think of but to no avail. Core temp at random times will say a random single core is overheating and then shut down my PC. This obviously doesn't go along well with trying to run FAH. I have cleaned my rad off, disassembled my whole box and rewired everything, and still nothing. Is it possible that a single core can overheat? If so how would I go about dealing with this.

If it's not one of the cores it would have to be a bad read from my mobo I would assume. I also had some issues in the past with SATA drives randomly disappearing and not being recognized anymore as well as I had some lockups where I couldn't get the screen back on after leaving the PC for awhile. This leads me to believe it must be the mobo, but I want to make sure before I spend money sending it back to Asus and being with a box for 2 weeks as this is the only PC in the house that is hooked up at the moment.

A little more info for you guys, it's the box in my sig, running Win7 Pro, and the overheating sometimes happens overnight when nothing is even running and I get up in the morning to have my PC shutdown. I even tested with having FAH off for a few days (hence not doing any WUs for the past few days). Any help would be greatly appreciated.

The sata drive thing is usually from unstable bus overclocks...
I have not seen it in years ... last I saw that was on a c2d machine.

Oops forgot to change sig. I got rid of the OC near the beginning of the year since it gets so hot here in the summer and I didn't want anything to happen. So it's all at stock speeds except for my GPU which is at 1500/1000 I believe.

Well it's an ROG board so the Asus Rep Raja here on the forums is usually pretty helpful with that (and I've never had an issue with Asus RMA :)), but still I'm a little pissed that this is happening. I only have 1 pc and I spent $275 on this damn board when it was top of the line so I wouldn't run into these problems.

I wouldnt expect that to be stable unless its on water...
and even then thats nice...

id loose the overclock on the card for a bit... might be pushing too much through the slot.

Really? That is the same speeds as the GHz edition that has almost the same amount of cooling my card has. I'll attempt that when I get home tonight, but could that possibly be causing all my other problems as well because it's overloading the whole MB? I have basically zero clue as to whether these are all NB or SB or a mix of both since I don't really know a whole lot about mobo construction.

oh...facepalm you listed the speeds backwards I knew that...:rolleyes:

try a different slot...check the board for circuitry issues...

Clean all dust off...
 
as far as the temp thing goes if its the rig in your signiture, yes its 100% impossible for coretemp to detect a single core overheating on the phenom II x6's since the chip uses a single temp sensor in the middle of the chip. my guess is to fix that problem is turning off all the temp shut down stuff that should be in the bios, defaults usually 70C. as far as the rest of the stuff sounds like something is wrong with the board.

the only other thing i can suggest for the hard drive issue is to turn off the hard drive power saving feature in the advanced power settings of windows, see if that helps you. it might be shutting off the hard drives and the board isn't re-enabling them after they go to sleep.

Lol I thought so. You need some more coffee this morning? :p

I'll try a different slot tonight and see if anything changes. On the cleaning front I literally dusted my whole case when I had it apart over the weekend. Hell I even took the blades out of my fans so I could clean them as well. I'll check inside the slot though as that usually is not on my list of things since until recently I didn't have any animals let alone 3 in the house.
 
Ok so far so good. *Knocks on wood*

I don't know what happened, but it seems to be doing better now. I still can't get the other 2 HDDs to show up in windows, but that can be handled later I want to make sure that I get a stable DD before anything else.

And thread necro! So I'm still confused by all of this as it's not just a little bit of overheating. At random times a single core will jump to 118*C. I know that is a physical impossibility so besides turning off overheat protection what could possibly cause this? A faulty MB? I have already started an RMA request with Asus and hopefully it goes well.
 
Question, at the times when it shows a single core jumping up is it always the same core? If not then it almost certainly is not a CPU issue.
 
I've only noticed it be 2 cores, but that is only because I have only been paying attention recently.
