I'm not in the habit of naming boxen for anything else than what's in 'em, such as "Screamer" (for the howling CPU fan), the "Spaz" twins (0.1 release boards that won't run AGP cards in a stable manner), or "Colossus" (honking tall server tower case). I broke that with "Two Petes", named in honor of two of my co-workers who are fighting the dragon first-hand.

This week, I got rocked by emails of first one, then the other Pete undergoing surgery at Johns Hopkins for their respective cancers. Too early to give a prognosis on either chap.

I'm going to keep that boxen alive as long as I can, and praying that the namesakes outlive it by a long country mile.

Fold on, warriors of the [H]!

I cant name any machines for anyone, but i can add some to the cause just for them.

Hope they pull through.

Bettie Jo is still running strong.
Currently undergoing some TLC to repair a HDD failure (was RAID 1 so no biggie). She'll be DCing until the power company gives up or a cure is found.
I think there are a lot of boxen DCing 'for someone'.

all my pc's fold for someone and hell i might not even know thier names or where they came from or where they went but I continue to fold for them and and those to come!!

No finer comment could be made.
I'll just quote it and add "Amen"

Fold on.

I can appreciate not offending the sensibilities of some folks, but "damn" should have been left in the subject.

This morning, my uncle (father's brother and only sibling) went under the knife for prostate cancer. Early prognosis: favorable.

To provide a further kick in the teeth, I find out that my sister-in-law (brother's wife) was diagnosed with brain cancer. Early prognosis: inoperable. Three daughters and my bro lose their loved one by Thanksgiving.

There are no "smilies" that can convey the emotional content.

There will be no letup on this farm. It just got personal.

DAMN....

I'm sorry for your news.

Tony is sending hardware... I'll be busy. The new AMD rig will be named after her... what shall I call her.

April.

Funny thing; she'll forget more than I'll ever know about computer networking.

Head down, got folding to do...

Update: Good News! Thank the deities for second opinions. The sister-in-law was misdiagnosed. Her condition is still not good, but NOT life-threatening. Privacy aspects concerning the rest, but she'll live. It'll be a good Christmas after all.

Been a long while back for this thread. The "Two Petes" machine is still pulling, but...

One of the "Petes" is doing OK, although the steroids have him looking like a Macy's parade caricature of himself.

Pete Welty, Sr., died this Monday at home. He'd taken a turn for the worse over the past month, went to the doctors about ten days ago and was given the bad news. His response to their prognosis was, "I don't want to know how long I've got, just keep it to yourselves."

God speed, buddy...

sorry to hear that.
from that response it sounds like he was more concerned with living than worrying about how much time he had left. I guess it, for lack of a better phrase, makes me feel good when I hear that. Get busy living or get busy dying, something like that anyway.

I am very sorry to hear about your friend, having lost two this year, and taking dad in for his second chemo tomorrow I am praying that everyone with these problems gets well. even if I know that some won't. the new box will be coming on line this week end, and one more in the next week or so. then it's save up more money.

that will put me at 21 boxen and room for three more, not nearly enough, but all I can see being able to afford. We will find the cure, it just is sometimes it does seem very far off.

Keep the faith, and keep on folding, We will overcome this damn beast.

Sorry to hear about your loss!
Take heart in the fact, you are doing your part to end this beast's reign of destruction.
