Ahh! Should I do it???

Ok, I'm about ready to take the plunge. Here's the spec, give me your final thoughts. I have a couple options that i'd like some opinions on.

A64 San Diego 3700+ (already ordered it)
Shuttle SN25P
eVGA 6800GT or MSI X800XL (I really can't decide on this one - the low power draw on the ATI might be a big plus - your thoughts?)
Raptor SATA 74GB 10,000RPM
Western Digital SATA 100GB 7,200RPM (necessary? i'm not sure)
1GB OCZ Dual Channel DDR400 RAM
Samsung CD/DVD Burner
Logitech MX1000
Eclipse Keyboard

I've got a keyboard and monitor that I can use.

Should I do it? Should I?

:D

EDIT: Also, what about game compatibility issues? I was a 9700 pro user, switched to 6800 GT and really liked it. with ATI i felt like some games simply didn't like the ATI cards. Is that still the case? I'm out of the loop.

Looks like a nice system. You're the one to judge whether you need the extra hard drive. For just a system partition + games and a little music maybe, 74gig hdd would be fine.

basically, on video cards: Direct3D (DirectX) games like ATI, OpenGL games likes NVIDIA.

HL2/CSS is Direct3D, Doom3 is OpenGL.

But x800xl or 6800gt will produce easily playable framerates at superb quality in every game in existence today.

yeah - maybe i'll just stick with nvidia...but then again, silent hunter 3 has an nvidia bug...and the power consumption thing...but ati's driver...

arg, i'll go insane.

thanks

Thats pretty much the same thing I want to build.
But rather than the MSI card I would propose you take one from GeCube :

Single Slot version, quiet and referrence card results.
And as a 2nd hard disk I plan to get a Samsung P120 SATA II with 250GB. :D

they aren't selling them at newegg (that looks good) where would you order it?

I'd love to find out. That's the card (Gigabyte X800LE) I'm planning on going with once I get ready to build my shuttle. Really good review of it
Gigabyte X800LE.

While you pulled the "X800LE" out of your ass, the X800XL is a rather nice card. Not sure what you want a Raptor for, especially when you are looking for something quiet- personally I'd just go with one 300GB or 400GB 7200.8 from Seagate, with more than enough performance and silence to go around for everyone.

As far as I know the most benefit you get is the low access time of the Raptor? So if you are used to work with several programms and do not like to wait your optimal choice would be the Raptor!

Or not?

Performance wise, it's the fastest, but you don't have to have the fastest in order to get excellent performance. You're not using an FX or an XT/Ultra, are you? Another thing to think about, is in such a small enclosure, what are you going to do about the noise a 10,000rpm drive makes? I'd rather have the near silent Seagate, or maybe Samsung, rather than put something that noisy (not necessarily loud, but annoying) in my case.

yeah, while the 10,000 rpm might be nice for a little, noise is probably going to be a bigger concern. - i'll probably go with

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16822148033

Right now i'm thinking about an eVGA 6800GT and a Zalman VF700 to keep it cool and quiet. That was i can stick with a card I know works, that I'm used to having, and that seems to be slightly faster that the X800XL - since i have a 6800GT in my other rig, it would be a bummer to step down in speed, even if just a tiny bit.

How big is the difference in time it takes to start a memory intensive program, relying on very big files, between a Raptor and a Seagate/Samsung SATAI/II drive?

Somehow I would guess the Raptor would win by a reasonable bargin.

Just to mention that on idle Ati cards consume less power . On other hand under a load they comsume more. So I would say that argument is pointless.

10000rpm makes difference on movingfiles specialy small once. Though interface and amount and speed of a cache decides how fast is a hdd in shorthbursts of data and there are all modern harddisks pretty good. In shorth bursts Maxtor DiamondMax 10 16 MB SATA 150 HDDs should be pretty fast. Cache is actualy important for adressing (finding) data it aint buffer but still it accelerates hdd.

So two 300 GB Maxtors in RAID 0 should be pretty quick and offer 600 GB storage. I take that over a 74 GB Raptor.

god dammit!!!

the SN25P went out of stock ... like five minutes ago.

EDIT: any other recommendations where to buy? I've got to get this system cooking soon.

phew, it's back in stock at newegg. ordered at 6pm, selected rush processing, got a tracking number at midnight.

i heart newegg.

Psh, I had pauses with a stock 6800GT/Silencer setup, using every nVidia driver. Have never had a issue on my 9700 Pro or X800 VIVO with ATi's drivers. SM3.0 was nice in FarCry, though and nVidia's AA difference was barely noticeable in game. GT really overheated my SFF rig though. You should be happy with the X800XL.

MX1000 intertia is something to overcome and the flow of the pointer is not smooth either. I would personally have gone with a wired version, but it's still not a bad mouse.

Last, you know there are other stores beside Newegg and less expensive rigs than Shuttle's? They're cute, but you could have gone with an $80 939 mATX board, $50-100 mATX case and had a buttload of money left over to upgrade to something like an X850XTPE or faster CPU.

Will a X850 even fit in the shuttle case or any SFF case for that matter?

If you didn't buy the Shuttle, then why would it matter? :p Any mATX system will support dual-slot cards. There are a few Shuttle-sized SFFs that support them as well.

Just know that you don't have to shell out $400 for a 939 SFF. It's not the only option! There are much quieter, cheaper and more flexible alternatives out there.

What would you recommend then? I for one am looking at the new 400 dollar shuttle because of it's size and flexibility as well as its cpu cooling. I am new to the SFF so I do not know what to look for. I like the fact they have a pretty nice cooling system and that you can get a 350 watt power supply. I am a gamer and want to have a nice processor with a nice video card and the last thing I want to worry about is the power :) Anyway, can you please link up some alternatives that are cheaper but still have a nice power supply and equal cooling?
