good or bad?

i enabled it in the bios before installing xp.

having a few problems and was wondering if i should disable it.

You need a 3rd option.

DEFINTELY go at least ACHI if not RAID on your ICH settings. Every box I've built- well over 50-60 now I have tried multiple settings and have always seen a subastantial improvement going AHCI or RAID. This has mostly been with Intel ICH7R/8R and 9R SB's using all WD HDDs. YMMV.

I have had both on computers and I never noticed anything different (and HD Tach didn't show anything as I recall). I don't "hot swap" drives and as a single user NCQ does not come into play at all. For me its just a extra PITA to do the whole F6 thing on an install.

Why not take the extra thirty seconds to install an AHCI driver? You could find out if it's worth your trouble by doing an install both ways... but I think it'll be faster and a more productive use of your time to just install it.

Hotplug support is very important to me, hence AHCI is a requirement for me.
