AHCI

I am setting up a new PC with WD-750 GB (WD7500AAKS).

I am not using Raid. Should I set AHCI for the SATA devices? Currently, I have connected 3 SATA devices: One WD-750 and two DVD bruners.

I read it somewhere that I have to set this parameter before installing Windows (XP, SP2)

SATA modes:
IDE = compatibility
RAID = AHCI + RAID functions available
AHCI = AHCI only

I think even Intel recommends either choosing IDE or RAID.

I thought AHCI would increase the hard disk performance to optimize the movement of the HDD head for read/write by multi users or applications. When I read the article, it makes sense !

I can set AHCI in the MB BIOS (P5K Premium). So, the hard disk will be AHCI, how about the 2 DVD burners? Should they be AHCI or IDE?

According to my research, this is what I have to do:
1. Set MB BIOS to AHCI
2. When installing Windows XP, pless F6 to input the driver (Intel Matrix Storage Manager).

I thought F6 was only to install RAID. Didn't know AHCI required such pre-configuration drivers.

As for DVD burners, it's common they're on IDE's.

Just to be clear. My 2 DVD-burners are SATA drives (Pioneer 212 and LG H62N).

In the BIOS, I should set it to IDE?

AHCI requires drivers (and F6 during installation) of Windows XP, but Vista has the drivers built in.

I'm wondering: if you have SATA hard drives and optical drives on the same controller and set it to AHCI, will the optical drives work?

Don;'t really know what you mean.
I am connecting each SATA device to its own SATA port on the MB.

I'm asking if optical drives will still work when the controller is set to AHCI mode. There doesn't seem to be a way to set AHCI/IDE on a port-by-port basis.
