My boot.ini file got messed up so I restored it and now my 2nd hard drive is gone. If I go to storage managment it says its not partitioned. How do I recover this drive? I'm guessing its settings in the boot.ini. Please help me by posting your boot.ini if you have 2 hard drives or tell me how to fix my big problem. Thanks.

Heres a screen shot and my boot.ini right now. (disk 1 is the one that disappeared)

Someone please help me. I have 50 gigs of important stuff I need to recover.
 
I think you need to mount the drive.
That should at least get your data back.

To edit you boot.ini

Start>Run>msconfig


That's all I know.

If the drive is corrupted, you could use data recovery tool.
 
How do I mount it? Sorry about the noob question but its been a while since I have built/installed a computer/hard drive.
 
Right Click Disk1 On Disk Managment. your should have a option Initalise use it that should re-activate your disk.

Did that. Nothing changed. When I frist open the storage part in computer management it asks me if I want to initalise and I click yes than it says convert to dynamic disk? I say no and than click ok and than it closes back to computer management and nothing changes. Before I had the hard drive set up as a dynamic drive.

Did you recently install a new drive?
How about new software?

Data corruption is a pain in the keester. And the fact that you can see it in the Disk Management and not initialize it leaves me guessing.

Is it possible to put the drive in another system?
 
I installed alot of software. I havent turned off my computer in a couple of weeks. It has to be a software problem. I dont have another computer that runs right now to test it.
 
I would search the disk drive forum. Other than that you could call tech support if you bought the pc from dell or whomever.

They'll tell you to try rebooting it. Then reinstall windows. Reinstalling might not be a bad idea. As long as you make sure not to format the drive you are trying to save. From the looks of you machine's desktop i'd say you have a lot of software on it. Bit-rot could have deep sixed your windows install.
 
Whats a good data recovery program? If this doesnt work than Ill reformat the hard drive. Also hopefully anyone here doesnt own a dell or gateway since I think they are the 2 wrost premade computers. Also I posted in the storage section but not to many people go there so I posted here as well. Sometimes I can wait a few days at the storage section without anyone replying.
 
Any other programs that I dont have to use dos? No floppy disks and my CD burner quit working a while ago. (why dont I just though this peace of shit out and buy a new one with all these problems :confused: )

EDITED: Nevermind. Found a floppy.
 
shutdown, disconnect the HDD, rebbot access the BIOS, select Force ESCD (generally under the PNP\PCI submenu if its not automatic) loggin, shutdown, reattach the drive but this time on a different channel (IDE1 as a slave ideally) reboot.

You should be presented with a new device found wizard
and asked to reboot that should initilize the disk since it didnt seem to work through Diskmgmt

if it still doesnt work you will need to access the disk and likely fix the partition ID
in which case getting a FDD\floppy disk & cable that actually works will be required ;)
 
I found my problem. I had a boot virus and i'm guessing it corrupted the boot section.

Also it says theres no partitions when I use a data recovery program. And no file structure.

Now how do I do this? I got the floppy drive to work. Just used a different floppy disk and it stopped giving me the I/O errors.

Ice please help me 1 more time than this thread can RIP. Theres no way to get my data back unless I take it in and pay big bucks. I tryed alot of programs and only 1 semi worked and the files were totaly messed up. I also give up on recovering the data. What I was trying to save was my games and my music and my brothers DVD backups. (I buy games online and have to download them but I can redownload them once I get this hard drive reformated).

It didt have a OS install and it had about 40 gigs of data and 1 partition. I went into dos and reformated than it would let me intilize and after it finished formating and partitioning it disappeared again and its back to how it was. I'm starting to get mad now at this dam thing. Anyway I ran maxtor ulity to check if it was a bad hard drive and no errors came up. Its 200 gigs also.

Also how do I get rid of virtual drives? I keep uninstalling it but it keeps coming back.

I own like 24 games and 11 are on cds. I dont like swapping cds out whenever I play. I switched my games to my new hard drive when I got it so I zipped all my no cd key cracks. My step dad works for microsoft and would kill me if he found stuff like that.
 
If you have some budget for software, DFSee (here) can rebuild your partition table in place.
