AGP x2000 series

Well, assuming that any of that is accurate, you can color me interested in that 2600xt version.

God only knows what kind of price rape will be occurring if any of that comes to pass.

I say $50 premimum initially. But it will be $20~$30 shortly afterwards.

AGP will be supported through RIALTo bridge chip, and chips in question are of course, RV610 and RV630. RV610 will probably come to market only as Radeon HD 2400 Pro, and we are talking about this castrated part with eight vect5D shader pipelines. If you have bought into the whole stream processing units non-sense, we're talking about 40 Stream Processors (Scalar Shaders), 64-bit memory interface and either 128MB or 256MB of DDR2 memory. Memory is of course, your plain vanilla DDR2-800, so it is clocked at, oh my, 400MHz DDR (800 MT/s). GPU is clocked at 525MHz, but allow for some differences between various partners. Bandwidth is sadly, sucky 6.4GB/s. Just plain awful.

at what point does it become too much of a waste of money to buy new AGP cards? yes if you want to go PCIE you need a new mobo, and if you get a new mobo your going to need new everything else which is costly. but is it worth buying a card that, while better then the card you have now, is garbage compared to its PCIE equivalant at the same price? your paying even more for a ported, scaled down version just so that you can keep your aging system.

In case you weren't aware, those quoted specs are the same for PCIe and AGP. The 2400 cards are friggen slow. But they sip power and they are better than integrated crap. That's the point. 2600s have some hope of being much better.

In my situation, I have to throw out the whole computer to go PCI-E, because it's a shuttle. If I can get a Card like that to throw into the system for a reasonable price, say for less than it would cost me to buy a PCI-e based shuttle system, then thats my threshold.

Not to mention I'd have to buy new ram, and a processor, with a new(er)shuttle, and then buy a video card for it.

So I guess for the resolutions I can run at, which aren't extreme, I don't mind using old dead tech, if the price is right.

I stopped being at the forefront of technology because I stopped liking the price associated with it, so i've been buying used premium parts from forums and such for the last few years.

Awesome!

This will make many AGP users very happy including me

I'm running a P4 3.4ee oc'ed to 3.75 and runs Vista smooth like butter, can't wait to replace my x800xt with this. I knew it was a good move passing on the x1950/xt agp's

crap... i was hopeing for something comparable to the 1950xts so i could replace mine. oh well, looks like ill be keeping it till the R700s.

Some of us can't afford to be truly [H] I suppose. You should start a petition to get us all kicked off the forum for not truly upholding the namesake.

I guess I'll start my own forum. I'll call it [L]amers, and it will be for everyone who doesn't have the money to be cutting edge, or upgrade to the latest and greatest. We can have conversations about DDR and AGP, and see if we can queeze another couple kbps out of our 56k modems.

I'll be over here in the stockades at town square if you guys want to throw rotten vegetables or outdated computer hardware at me.

I just spent 500k on a new house, so unfortunately my new system has to wait

another [L]amer,
rawd

overall !

No more condo/apartment living for this guy, been there for 6 months now and I'm loving it :)

i bet! house + agp system > apt + pci-express sytem :)

of course, house + pci-express trumps them all. that time will come for you.

However, you watch your coinage in the meantime (and for a lot of us, as much as we may lust after a completely new system, it's often *not feasable*).

I have a relatively decent AGP system by *normal* standards (not only supports Windows Vista, but even supports Aero; in fact, it runs Vista Ultimate today), it does, in fact, have a WEI of 4.2 with only a mild (ten percent) CPU O/C (and believe it or not, a memory U/C: I have 1.5 GB of mixed DDR400 and DDR333 DRAM, two 512 MB DDR400 and two 256 MB DDR333 sticks, all undercranked to DDR266). While I can't run even the Lost Planet DX9 demo (graphics are driven by an ATI AIW 9700 Pro in AGP), I *can* run both C&C3 Tiberium Wars *and* SupCom passably. All I have to do is wait until mid-July and I can leapfrog past SM 3.0 and go directly to SM 4.0 with a Sapphire HD2600 Pro (or even HD2600XT) without breaking the bank (let alone robbing the bank) or having to junk everything and start over again. (Note that neither card will cost $200USD.) The only *other* purchase I would *possibly* have to make would be a new PSU (which is still *maybe* $150USD). Total outlay: $350USD. Beats the heck out of $1000USD (which is what a new PCIe system would cost).

Had AXP system, upgraded to A64/AM2 for 310 dollars.
New specs:
AM2 A64 Orleans 3200+
Gigabyte M61P-S3
7800GT
2GB G.Skill DDR2 800

Thats an excellent price for that upgrade, if I was still running a tower rig, I would have upgraded already. My main hinderence is I'm waiting for the SFF Shuttles in the AM2+ range before I upgrade. I'd like to go whole hog with a Super Fast SFF, and be able to take full advantage of the new K10 series coming down the pipe.
