Hello all, maybe your advice can help me through my AGP nightmare.

Just bought a new HIS ICEQ x1950.

Installed the distro from the HIS website. Set up froze during WDM install, then gave me an remote procedure call error mesage after I forced it to end. Then the distro continued to load the rest of the drivers just fine and said setup completed successfully. Opened cataylyst and there was no video preview. So...

I tried the Omega Drivers. They did not help anything. So...

I used driver cleaner, then force installed the drivers only. HL2 worked beautifully all settings maxed. So I decided I wanted to reformat anyways to smooth out everything including some viruses and what not and I wanted the driver install to run completely.

This time, the same thing happened. But HL2 doesn't make it to the main menu without crashing. So I decided to use the newest drivers from ATI's website, to see if maybe the install would run entirely (including the WDM)...Same thing happened. It got to the WDM and froze then continued to install everything else. And this time the catalyst previews worked..But...HL2 still doesn't work.

So I repeated my last steps of driver cleaner and now in the process (at work so have to wait) to reinstall the driver only from teh HIS website.

ANY SUGESSTIONS? Is this normal? Is it fine to use just the basic drivers without all the extras? If so what do I nEED? I just want to play games, by card is beefy, I don't need to overclock or anything. But it would be nice to have catalyst.

I use SK8V, Fx51, 520 psu, 2 gb memory (just installed 2 new 512 sticks with the video card)

I personally never use Catalyst. I just install the standalone driver and use ATITool for any tweaking. Catalyst doesn't do much for me except suck down system resources.

The HIS, does not have VIVO, so you should not be installing the WDM drivers at all. I would unintsall everything related to the ATI Drivers including Cat Control Center, then intsall Cat 6.12 which you can download from here .....

http://downloads.guru3d.com/download.php?det=1534

.....then let us know what is going on. Just RMA'd my HIS about a week ago. Also what make an model is your 520w PSU?

UPDATE: On my lunch break I cleaned all drivers in safemode, downloaded each individual driver set up file and installed all seperately, excluding CCC and even installed the newest Direct X release...
Everything installed fine, prompting me to restart each time. HL2 still crashes before loading main menu, CS2 will load, but the screen is about 2 inches off to the left. It will even run the video stress test that way, but everything looks smooth, just offset..
So..

I am reinstalling HL2 and CS2.

Why did you send it back? Also its a vantec stealth PSU...

As for drivers, don't know about that one, on the box it says its made for AVIVO...

Also from what I can see the WDM drivers and AVIVO drivers are seperate installs and for totally different things (If you look under the seperated driver list on ATI's website)

I just installed the same card last night. Used the stand alone driver pkg and tray tools.
I just tried the drivers that are listed for the x1950 only and didn't like them (everytime I rebooted I had to reset my desktop).
So far the 6.12 cats seem to be working great.
One thing a lot of guys have complained about is the temps. I went into tray tools and turned them up and it idles at around 37c and around 51c under load.
Good luck with yours.:)

Avivo is not VIVO (video in / video out). The HIS X1950 Pro AGP does not have Video-in, so you should not be using WDM drivers.

Avivio is just an ATI buzzword for fancy transcoding/encoding of video files and it is built-in to the normal ATI Driver Set.

If you're are installing using the complete driver package which I recommend, setup should automatically detect your card and install what is required.

Your Vantec looks like it pumps out 28a on the +12v rail, so your almost right there for the 30a recommendation.

Oh, my HIS card was losing signal to my LCD under 3D Load.

awesome, that is very helpful info..probably should have researched that myself.
so I will clean the wdm drivers out when I get home.
What card are you replacing it with? I plan on getting an LCD soon...I still have 30 days to rma to newegg...

Also should I use the drivers that came with the disk? And I have been hearing a lot about ccc 6.12...why is that??

I RMA'd for hopefully a HIS that works. I really wouldn't use the Cat 6.09's from the CD. The newer Cat 6.12's seem to work the best and the latest 7.1's have had some issues with the X1950 Pro's. Let me know how it goes. How old is your Power Supply by the way.
