AGP Graphics Card - Bottleneck?

My friend wants a new graphics card. Unfortunately, his computer sucks. What AGP 8x card should he get without being overkill? Here's his specs:

2.66 Ghz Celeron 330
Asus P4S800D Mobo
1.5 GB RAM
Nvidia MX 4000 GPU

Yeah, he knows it sucks, it's an old computer anyway. He only wants advice on a GPU. He's saving for another machine.
 
for 120 he can get an agp ati 4650 with a gig of ram on it that is the best he can do with out upgrading the whole rig
 
He just plays WoW, really. He says he wants to play Diablo III on it too. Dunno how well that's going to work out though.
 
that card blows for wow... but hey it should work way better than what he has... and its not like he really has a choice... :p
 
He's limited to AGP 8x, so anything he gets is going to suck.

He wants to know if there's any decent card to be had for under $75.

If he's saving toward a new system and willing to spend 75 for an AGP card, that 75 could go a long way toward making his new system better, not even slightly joking on that one.
 
Agreed. He really should just save $300 and build a new computer. AGP cards just aren't worth it at this point. (bad drivers, high cost for low-ish performance)
 
that is why im not using that card right now... 100 will buy a good mobo for a new processor 60 more he has a mid range dual or low end quad core 60 more on that 2 gig ram 50 more on that buys a low end pci-e card that beats that card the best course of action for him would be to sell his current machine and use the money to buy a new one but i doubt he will get much as you find machines like that in dumpsters now though a new video card would let him play wow better im running a

3200+
2 gig ddr 400
ati x1650 pro and it plays wow pretty well
 
If he insists on getting a videocard, I'd get an nVidia 6600GT or 6800GT assuming his PSU can take the load. If you have enough money left over, maybe you could upgrade to a Pentium 4! :D

This quote is very funny...I'm still laughing. Seriously though, get rid of the celeron. They're just some past CPUs that when you hear the name, you just cringe. That's one of them. I've never met a Celeron I liked.
 
Try to convince him to buy a $45 AM2+ mobo with onboard graphics, an Athlon II 435 for $66, and 2 GB of DDR2 memory for $42. It'd be $143 but.. even putting money into an AGP card on that system is a terrible idea, even if you find a $75 AGP card it'll still be worthless with that Celeron on board.

The IGP on a AM2+ mobo is still faster than the MX 400 he's using now and by having a faster CPU at *least* he can turn down the graphics and run at decent frame rates, without the CPU it doesn't matter what GPU he puts in there WoW will run like crap.

+1, plus this will allow decent video card upgrade at a decent price.

That with a HD4650/4670/5570/5670 should give him amazing WOW performance.
 
Believe me guys, I've been telling him to put that computer out of it's misery. My suggestion to him was to just buckle down and bear with it until he has enough money to get a better system.

I laughed at the Celeron quote. I groaned when I saw that was what he had. I only asked about the upgrade possibility because he was very persistent.

I'll pass on the recommendations to him. Thanks guys.
