AGP Fastwrite not working.

I just upgraded from an KD7A to an NF7-S. Video card is AIW Radeon 8500. The fast write worked with the KD7 board but it will not with the NF7. Even though the BIOS setting is set to "Enabled" and Sandra tells me the motherboard supports it and it's enabled and that the video card supports it, ATI's SMARTGart says it's not.

I've also noticed that despite everything is a lot faster(ram/cpu oc'd) on the NF7 than it was on the KD7 that some of my games aren't running quite as smoothly. I've read that the Fast write isn't that big of a performance booster but it sure was for me. Any suggestions? Any known problems? I haven't had much look find anyone with the same problem.

Specs:

Barton 2500+ XP oc'd to 2.3ghz
Corsair XMS PC3200 512mb running at around 418mhz
ABIT NF7-S Board
AIW Radeon 8500 Latest Cat drivers
Windows 2000 SP3

FastWires DO NOT boost performance in any way. IF fact most of the time FastWrites just cause problems.

SMARTGart's purpose is to detect when there is a possible problem and disable it. FastWrites are one of the first things it gets rid of.

Your performance problems lie elsewhere.

I had this same problem with my 8500 and NF7-S and the only way I found to force FW was with third party programs such as PowerStrip and RivaTuner.

Now what's strange is that with my 9700p, SG likes to enable FW by default, but disables SBA. WTF? Again I have to use third party software such as WPCREDIT/WPCRSET etc.. Performance is negligible with them on or off but benchmarking shows them to yield a small boost so I just leave 'em on until I run into probs.

FastWrites are better left off. No reason to have a feature enabled that gives virtually no gain when it is known to be a problem causer.

smartburt (my name) is probably overriding your bios settings.

Like has already been mentioned ive never seen a benchmark where fast writes did anything substantial. Id leave it off, you may be running into another mobo setting thats causing you problems.

Just because the Motherboard enables it, it doesn't mean that the video driver will use it. I have a Gigabyte Radeon 8500, and forcing fast writes on (using PowerStrip) gives me loads of problems (polygon popping)...so don't worry about fast writes - rather try and overclock your AGP bus, that will yield even better results than you thought you would get from fast writes :)
