AGP Bus lock?

Hey folks, i've currently got an ASUS P4C800-E Deluxe running my P42.8c @ 3.05ghz. My question is: should I be using an AGP Bus lock? at what speed? or just leave it at [auto] ?

I guess i'm lacking on the reason behind using a lock like that. Anyone care to take a moment to educate a noob? ;)

I would use one because the other components of your system aren't designed to be run out of spec..at all. PCI/AGP should be locked at 66 MHz and 33 MHz, respectively.

I've read about people's hard drives burning out because of a lack of a lock... :eek:

Momo is correct. When you lock it you ensure that the pci/agp devices are working at the proper clocks that they were designed to use under normal operating conditions. When you OC it is not normal operating conditions. In computers and electronics in general one clock is often used to drive many seperate clocks. They do this by running it through divide by and multiply by counters which (depending on the type) can turn a 1 MHz clock used for system mem (these are all hypothetical clocks to show the point) to 4MHz for your Agp and 10 MHz for your memory. This is all done by running that one clock to different chips. This is more efficient than having 3 seperate oscillators. Now when you mess around with the original 1 MHz clock, the others will also go up proportionally. Now since you are really only wanting to up the first clock not all of them, you lock the others as to ensure you are only affecting what you want to affect. Confused yet? Lock them. I have the same chip as you and currently have it running at 3.45GHZ 24/7, so you have a ways to push yet!!!

Uh yeah. It's cooled by an XP-120, with a Panaflo L1A... it does NOT get hot ;)

it's gonna be watercooled, soon, too.

I wonder if having the AGP Bus not locked was causing my not to be able to POST beyond 3.2ish ? Definately going to lock them when I get home. Should be good...

Mine is watercooled now and if you haven't spent the money yet, DON'T. I only gained a couple of MHz. I was able to get to 3.4GHz before, and now only a slight improvement. Now the chip does stay cool and therefore it'll prolly last longer, but not too much gain. I'll be upgrading soon to a 3.2 northy or pressy soon. What Voltages are you running?
 
I'm not into watercooling for the temps. I'm in it for the noise reduction on my video card... and as a hobby ;)

I was just going to ask you what Voltage you're running on your Vcore ?

.... should I be leaving the memory to [auto] ? to avoid a divider, as Intel doesnt like them... or am i thinking about this the wrong way?

If i set it on auto, i can boot into windows at around 240 FSB, but my sisoft memory bench drops down to the 4.4-4.5gb range. ..whereas now, they are both over 5.1gb
 
I have 1.7Vcore at 3.45 GHz. You have upped you memV also right. Mine actually takes less voltage when I oc harder, but thats because they are gskill and they are a little different and don't need a lot of volts. I set mine to 1:1 and not to auto. I would rather keep my ratios at 1:1 and get a lower OC than go to a 5:4 divider and get a couple extra MHz. I get 5.9 on sandra and that is with stuff running. I think using a divider will lower you bandwidth, but I am not positive on that. Let me know how you OC goes man. I will help as much as possible. I think the limits of these chips is around the 3.5 mark though. I can boot at 3.5 and even bench, but it is not quite stable for gaming, therefore useless.
 
okay, so.. what motherboard are you using?
i'm not sure how to make sure this bios is using a 1:1 ratio :confused:

and no, I have not upped the voltage for the RAM (Vdimm?) as it's generic samsung RAM ... should I try that? how far?
 
I have an IC7 Max3, which is different, but not by much I think. Do you have motherboard monitor installed? It'll tell you your temps, which is important when OC. Also read the article in my sig for temps readings on asus and abit boards. Upping VMem will help with your OC as well. I do not know the specs on your mem, but if you google it, you will prolly find the memV voltage range. Mine is 2.6-2.85Vdc for my mem. The 1:1 ratio should be on the same page as the FSB setting (on mine it is anyways) if not there look at where you change your mem timings. Go through all the things that say auto and see if there is a setting for 1:1.
