AGP Aperture Size

So... is the PCIE aperture linked to this? does it work different? or what. I have a hybrid board and it has an AGP size but nothing else.
 
I think they leave it @ 256

I can't seem to change aperture size with a pci-e card
 
agp aperature--as the name implies--is agp specific. the agp aperature is nothing but a cheap hack that was used to circumvent some of the lijmitations of the agp specification. pci-e does not have, nor does it need, something like that. on pci-e, an equivalent (and much more effective) technology would be hypermemory and turbocache.
 
yeah but agp aperture is the amount of memory the video card is able to claim for its self, so if I have a 256mb PCIE card it cant page extra?

Sure...but PCIE boards still have an aperature setting in bios (mine does, DFI LanParty CFX3200).

Also, in Vista, when I change the setting, I can see a detected difference in video memory in the operating system.

All this points to your thesis possibly beiong wrong.
 
It's a misleading term ,but yes back in the day it would be memory that would be used from the video card + the cpu .Doesn't mean anything today with the power the cards have.
If your card has 256mb of ram or even 128 !, I don't think the setting means diddly. It's a Placebo setting.

but I can promise that your "detected" difference makes no real performance difference either way. The main problem is that agp is god-awfully horribly horrendously slow at writing to system memory. Plus, tack on the fact that agp is only a half-duplex bus, meaning that it can read OR write from main memory, but not both simultaneously. System memory is an awful place for an agp video card to try and store or manipulate data. As MOC points out, agp aperature is misleading at best and completely broken at worst.

The only important thing about the agp aperature is to make sure it's set to at least 32 megs, since some chipsets will disable agp acceleration all together if the agp aperature is set too small. That's it.
