I read to keep it as low as possible.. 32mb.. I can go up to 512 meg.. which is correct? Also PCI Latency Timer I was told to set at 128.. it was at 32. Thanks for any help!
 
I've tried different agp sizes and the lower the faster it'll be but it's a real marginal difference like 20 or 30 points in 3dmark03. 64 causes some instability in certain things or stutter for me so I just keep it at 128.
 
ummm the agp aperturre size should be at 128 or 256... and the pci clock is at 33 right now? well keep it there so if u bump to 128 then all ur pci devices with go boom and a hot puff of smoke will come out ur case....
 
I went from 32 to 512 on the agp aperture size.... I picked up 500 points on 3dmark05!!! If I lower it to 32 it kills performance! What is this other thing? PCI latency Timer?
 
i dont think u should mess with teh pci latency timer.. that for overclocking purposes i think? but ur motherboard has a pci lock right? so don't worry about it and don't touch it!! :p
and besides upping pci timings WILL not improve performance... it will burn ur pci devices probably..
 
WIth my PCI latency at 32 my system is unstable.. at 128 its stable.. so its going up bad? or going down bad? becuase it seems to me at 32 its unstable
 
Ok.. 3dmark will not finish but will boot me out if my PCI latency is at 32.. only works at 128.. and from what ive read it does not burn up cards. Has something to do with how long a pci device holds on to I guess information? I have no PCI cards in my system.. Only thing I can think of is that I did a bios flash then later on noticed instability but only when then video was tasked etremely hard like with 3Dmark05. Kinda odd.

How...? I have 1 GIG of RAM and the highest my motherboard' BIOS will allow me to set the aperature size is to 256 MB... Do I need to update my BIOS?....(My computer information is in my sig.) :confused:
 
some motherboard just have the option... and besides he went from 32 to 512.. not 256 to 512.. going from 256 to 512 in my case gained nothing..

AGP Aperture Size

This BIOS feature does two things. It selects the size of the AGP aperture and it determines the size of the GART (Graphics Address Relocation Table).

The aperture is a portion of the PCI memory address range that is dedicated for use as AGP memory address space while the GART is a translation table that translates AGP memory addresses into actual memory addresses which are often fragmented. The GART allows the graphics card to see the memory region available to it as a contiguous piece of memory range.

Host cycles that hit the aperture range are forwarded to the AGP bus without need for translation. The aperture size also determines the maximum amount of system memory that can be allocated to the AGP graphics card for texture storage.

Please note that the AGP aperture is merely address space, not actual physical memory in use. Although it is very common to hear people recommending that the AGP aperture size should be half the size of system memory, that is wrong!

The requirement for AGP memory space shrinks as the graphics card's local memory increases in size. This is because the graphics card will have more local memory to dedicate to texture storage. So, if you upgrade to a graphics card with more memory, you shouldn't be "deceived" into thinking that you will need even more AGP memory! On the contrary, a smaller AGP memory space will be required.

It is recommended that you keep the AGP aperture around 64MB to 128MB in size, even if your graphics card has a lot of onboard memory. This allows flexibility in the event that you actually need extra memory for texture storage. It will also keep the GART (Graphics Address Relocation Table) within a reasonable size

This BIOS feature controls how long a PCI device can hold the PCI bus before another takes over. The longer the latency, the longer the PCI device can retain control of the bus before handing it over to another PCI device.

Normally, the PCI Latency Timer is set to 32 cycles. This means the active PCI device has to complete its transactions within 32 clock cycles or hand it over to the next PCI device.

For better PCI performance, a longer latency should be used. Try increasing it to 64 cycles or even 128 cycles. The optimal value for every system is different. You should benchmark your PCI cards' performance after each change to determine the optimal PCI latency time for your system.

Please note that a longer PCI latency isn't necessarily better. A long latency can also reduce performance as the other PCI devices queuing up may be stalled for too long. This is especially true with systems with many PCI devices or PCI devices that continuously write short bursts of data to the PCI bus. Such systems would work better with shorter PCI latencies as they allow rapid access to the PCI bus.

In addition, some time-critical PCI devices may not agree with a long latency. Such devices require priority access to the PCI bus which may not be possible if the PCI bus is held up by another device for a long period. In such cases, it is recommended that you keep to the default PCI latency of 32 cycles.
 
Its strange that my 3dmark will hang at 32 cycles.. at 128 it runs the benchmark fine every time... ive done this over and over.. I may try 64 cycles.. see what happens.. I will also play with the AGP and compare my benchmarks.
 
My manual with my eVGA 6800 Ultra has a "cheat sheet" with different BIOS settings they recommend you set if you can, and one is PCI Latency Timer....which they suggest 128.
 
thats exactly why I put it to 128.. EVGA site recommended it.. whats odd is if i try 32 or 64 I cant make it through the benchmark.. at 128 it makes it fine.. OR if I run it at 32 and only run one stick of memory in my machine it will make it through the benchmark.. I thought it was a bad stick of memroy so I tried them one at a time and both made it through the benchmark with no problems.. but if both were installed it kicked me out of 3dmark every time.. so then I started messing with bios settings.. and it was the PCI Latency timer that gave me by stability. Does this make any sense at all????
