Hi,

My friend has an old board that has an AGP 4x slot. He would like to know what is the best video card that is compatible with AGP 4x?

I've got an 6600GT on ebay if he's interested. It is 8x but compatible with 4x. It is not 'the best' of course, and if his other components do not bottleneck the GPU, he should get something like the ones proposed above. If he is somewhat limited by other components he may consider the 6600 or maybe an 7600GT.

A 3850 is going to be mostly wasted on whatever kind of system has only AGP 4x. Your friend should ditch the computer and just build new, which can be done for under $400.

an AGP 4x slot will badly bottleneck a 3850agp

My borther-in-law tested a 7800gs AGP on a 4x and 8x slot, and it ran decently faster in the 8x slot, and the 3850 smokes the old 7800gs.

Better off getting whatever cheapish 3650agp or a used x800 series, or 6800 series agp, if you can cheap.

Really better just upgrading the system.

Good suggestions from the members here but one thing is lacking. The power supply. If he does not have a good power supply then some of the cards mentioned may not work and in need of an upgrade.

Does he have a 2x/4x slot, or a 4x/8x slot? I'm guessing it's a 2x/4x in which case he wouldn't be able to use a 4x/8x card such as the 3850. The voltages and keys on the slots are different. The best you can do for 2x/4x is ATI Radeon 9500/9700/9800 (R350).

This. The 3850 wont even work in a 4x slot due to the lower voltage. It doesn't matter if he has a 1000w psu if the slot doesn't supply the power.

Best bet then is just a 9800pro used, if you want him to gimp along.

3850agp will not run, and an older system like that will badly bottle-neck the card.

Real best thing is just replace the system with a rebuild then

3850 will run just fine. I just looked them up and they are 4x/8x.

A complete overhaul would be worth it, but if he doesn't have the money for a full system rebuild, then a videocard would still be an ok bet.

Yes, but they don't use a 3.3v keyring, making them incompatible even though they are AGP.

A 9800 would be your best bet, but don't expect it to play any modern games at playable framerates.
