Here's something for all you conspiracy theorists. AMD just announced their 4X4 gamer platform (to be released next fall). They claim it may be possible to install a physics processor in the other socket on the mb. Any bets it may be possible they could be working with Ageia on this? With ATI's announcement of it's Havok physics and the recent gossip concening AMD NOT interested in ATI now- possibly Intel is- and rumors that Nvidia will be making processors- here is my thinking:

AMD-Nvidia-Ageia

Intel-ATI-Havok

It's going to be the Xbox vs PS3 like competetion soon in the PC world.

I'll bet that they're not. I expect to see co-processor devices that take advantage of the bandwidth from a full HT link. Something designed to run in a PCI slot doesn't need that bandwidth.

Maybe someone will make a GROMACS for ASICs. ;)
 
Why join them when you can beat them at their own game?


AMD would be more than willing to push their own PPU's out before joining Ageia... or they would buy Ageia out and save some R&D costs.
 
I would assume buy Ageia out- has to be a lot cheaper than developing your own.
 
I think that if anyone were to buy out agiea it would be a processor manufacturer. intel isnt ballsy enuph to make such a move (thats why I like their chips, because they are stable.) and AMD (from what I hear) doesnt have the money. ATI is in the same boat as intel, they are not the first foot in the door most of the time. So that leaves nvidia and AMD (if they are willing to put their balls on the line.)

I personally am an intel and ati fan, and I love ageia's ideas, but I think it would be bad for the consumer if any of these companies bought them. The PPU needs to be a monopoly, and as far as that goes, it needs to be independantly compatible with any combination of intel/ amd/ nvidia / ati. I would prefer to see them succeed on their own, but if they flop, I would rather see a software company buy them.
 
Ati is merging with AMD. It will be an ATI GPU optimized for Physics
 
What about multi-purpose accelerators? I know it might actully be impossible to do but it would be nice to see the idea thrown out. An all purpose accelerator that handles physics, network, Encryption, Divx/xvid/mpeg/wmv encoding, background defragmenter, Fast Search helper (will keep tabs of all you files and folders so when you do a search it will find it quick without taking up any cpu on your main cpu), direct x 10 accelerator (ok just throwing crap in the air now)

This would be great for any system big or small.

You'd need to pack a lot of hardware into one such device - and tbh most often task-specific is passed onto specialist hardware where possible and left on the CPU where not.

That's why NIC's>onboard ethernet (in some cases)
Soundcards>onboard sound
and 3d Video cards> software raster/texture/lighting and all the other funkeh jobs GPUs do these days :)

Essentially what you're suggesting is a CPU but faster, in which case all you'd need would be a faster CPU.

go to the store, and buy an ati x1600 pro for $99...

it does eye candy physics, encodes/decodes (on gpu), and I bet it'll have an update available for DX10. ATI perpusly made the x1k series reprogrammable. as far as the rest... unfortunately due to the way your pc is built it cannot access other hardware such as ethernet or your hard drive directly, so it would be routed through your CPU eliminating the purpose.

I remember reading about a "clearspeed" coprocessor not too long ago that would live on the HT bus. Me thinks thats a likely candidate, but "may" is far from will.
