Afterburner vs. Precision?

I've always used eVGA Precision, but I see both mentioned frequently. Is there any reason to use one over the other, or is it purely personal preference? I'm not really looking to do any overclocking at this point; mainly interested in fan profiles and monitoring temps. How do the two compare in terms of features, memory footprint, etc.?

The are both the same exact thing. Mods of rivatuner with different skins. The main difference being, EVGA is locked, while MSI allows any card, including ATI. I used to use Precision, but since my PNY GTX 480 is my strong card, EVGA Precision won't work as it doesn't detect my EVGA card in master slot. No loss really though.
 
Did not know that they were both mods of Rivatuner, thanks for that info. They do seem to be fairly similar but I wasn't sure if one was any buggier than the other. Looks like Afterburner is in the lead at this point; I may give it a try.
 
MSI has an advantage from supporting red and green camps, and has voltage adjustments IIRC.

The only advantage EVGA's one, and the only reason why I use it instead of Afterburner is it's UI. Hogs up less space on the desktop and generally neater.
 
I have been extremely impressed with MSI Afterburner and how easy it makes it to monitor all four of my GPUs at the same time, and it works seamlessly with my G15 which allows me to monitor temps in-game. It also works well with my 4850 crossfire setup.

But on the flip side it works like crap with my 9800GT and supports basic features only.

I thought that too until I changed to a different skin. There is a compact skin that comes with it.
 
I think you can set Afterburner to scale the fan speed whereas Precision has set points. Just what I've heard as I haven't used Afterburner but am currently using Precision.

Yes, with Afterburner you can create your own fan profile very easily. Love this feature, and I hope the next version of Rivatuner includes its with the same intuitive interface.
 
Afterburner is definitely superior. Keep in mind that all three - Rivatuner, Precision, and Afterburner - are made by the same guy. Basically, it's a process of evolution: Rivatuner was feature rich but UI terrible, Precision is improved UI but dumbed-down features, and Afterburner is good UI and good features rolled into one.
 
Thanks man. That's the impression I'm getting from reading here and various other places. Looks like I'll be trying with Afterburner for sure (incidentally, its lead in the poll has increased significantly in the past couple of days).

I used precision with nvidia and afterburner with ati. Afterburner seems a tad better for me
 
Uh, I use both. :D I use EVGA OC scanner to assist with Precision. :)
 
they are all essentially the same program with a different gui.. precision, afterburner, rivatuner are all made by the same guy.. i personally use EVGA precision since i own an evga card so i just grabbed it a while back when it first released..

The problem being that Punkbuster won't run with Afterburner loaded, which means I lose the custom fan profile in the game that most needs it.

I would love to see Nvidia just go ahead and license the technology from rivatuner already, and then make it part of Nvidia Control Panel. Then ATI would follow suit. Once within the existing drivers, other companies like Punkbuster would be forced to conform.

Hmm, I don't have that issue. Afterburner is always running on my system, and I have never had any issue with Punkbuster, other than at BC2's launch which had nothing to do with Afterburner. Try running the 1.6 Beta that you can grab from Guru3D's forum.
