what is the order that drivers, updates, DirectX and chipset drivers be installed?

I've always thought it was:

1. Windows Updates
2. Chipset Drivers
3. DirectX
4. Video drivers

but I was told that's wrong as well. So can you guys help me out?
 
I always do chipset drivers first, then the video drivers, then I restart....download service pack, restart, finish rest of updates, THEN do directx.
 
I do:
1. chipset
2. DirectX
3. Video and other drivers
4. Windows updates.
 
It seems that everyone has their own method. Personally, I don't think it makes *that* much of a difference...though I'd guess installing chipset first of all, then gfx, then directx would be best.
 
Chipset Drivers
Direct X
WIndows Update
Video Drivers
Sound Drivers
Drivers etc...
 
Let's look at it logically

After a format, what is on the hard drive.

Windows
Any drivers that Windows is aware of
DirectX

So logically, update what is ALREADY there before you install new stuff.

So,

1.) Service Pack 1
2.) Critical Updates
3.) Windows XP updates if you so desire
4.) DirectX
5.) This is hazy - Chipset drivers I would install next. IF you had to install them FIRST, say with the nForce2 and you needing your integrated LAN, then, that's fine. Some things just gotta be done.
6.) Video
7.) Sound
8.) Anything else.
 
let's not forget the uber-important last step of visiting Tweak Thread on the front page of G[H] page, b/c it'll be best to tweak it out right after reformatting.
 
Where would you get these drivers? I just reformatted and I don't know where to get my drivers :| I have no discs or anything..
 
well some drivers require a specific service pack and/or directx version to be installed first, so:

- chipset drivers
- Anti-virus (damn Blaster worm can infect a machine the second it connects to the network)
- LAN drivers
- Current Service Pack
- DirectX
- Windows Update
- other drivers
