The stock hsf on my 8600gt xxx is just too damn loud, 100% 24/7.
I was wondering what the most affordable quiet solution would be for it,
Be nice if it would throttle itself speed wise. Hell if i could make my stock hsf
slow when not under load that'd be awesome but rivatuner didnt work.

Thanks

Nah. Just rig up a support. Maybe get one of those $5 PCI brackets used to mount extra fans inside a case and use that.

Perfectly serious. I've seen people do similar things before.

This sounds like the Vista desktop stuff.

Try ATI Tray Tools. You can set fan speed % according to GPU temperature. Or you can just manually set it to <50% fan speed 24/7.

Or you can set it try setting it to <50% in 24/7, with game profiles to boost fan speed to >50%. Fairly sure that can be done.

Lately everyone has been talking about the Arctic Cooling Accelero S1 being great for the 8800GT. The Rev 2 is compatible with your 8600 so you might give that a shot. Works without a fan so its completely silent too.

Accelero S1 seems like the real no-brainer here. For $25, you get amazing passive cooling (if your case has half decent airflow). If you need to, attach 1-2 80mm fans on the sucker.

unless you 8600 is getting too hot i would just adjust the fan. some fans can be really loud in general though.

if fan just seems too loud for it's RPM, this is a really getto mod, but i have used chapstick to quite them down.

heat up the chapstick ( i use foil and a lighter ) and pour it in to the spot where you oil the fan. let it set for 30 seconds for the wax to cool. it will slow the fan a little and if the fan is just made poorly it will now be suspended the axle in a thick but not too thick wax.

I've seen a post somewhere that shows you how to attach 120mm low speed fan on accelero s2 for quiet cooling. Something to do with zip ties and clipping away the rim. accelero s2 is my choice on my htpc running 8500gt.
