Bought a used card with an EK-FC6970 Acetal block already installed. Temperatures were elvated for the watercooling setup. Upon trying to take the back plate off the card, I found 2 of the intermediate screws had been over tighted and broke. (There are screws that screw directly into the waterblock. These screws have a hollow threaded area for the outer screw to mount the card to the block.) Two of the hollow threaded scews are the ones that are broken.

Since, it would be a pain to try to re-tap the holes, is there any other suggestions to be able to mount the block back on the card properly? I was debating about using something like j-b weld to attach the intermediate screw to the block. Note without the intermediate, the block can not be completely secured to the card.

Second question. Since the waterblock no longer has a warranty as I am the second owner, would it be in my best interest to open the block up and clean it out for any possible residue/build up while the block is off the card? I seen several reviews showing how to clean it with ketchup or other mixtures. Any thoughts on this?

Update 9/13/12

Used the broken screw removal tool. Contacted EK and oddly they can not tell me exactly which mounting mechanism I need.

http://www.ekwb.com/shop/mounting-mechanism-fc6970.html (Would guess these, but will have to track down an M3 or M4 screw to test)

Does anyone know of anywhere state side that actually sells these? Can't really justify paying $33 just for shipping on a $5 part.

After using their ticket support, I ended up emailing their support email directly and they offered to give a quote on a cheaper shipping option.

Put the waterblock in the freezer for an hour or so (take the acetal cover off, as it could crack upon freezing the waterblock).
The screws that are broken off in the waterblock will shrink because of the cold and then you should be able to remove them easier.
Also, you could drill them out a bit using a drill press (the drill bit needs to be smaller that the screw diameter) and remove them using a easyout broken screw removal bit.

I'd suggest one of those broken screw removal tools. Failing that, get a drill bit that is just slightly larger than the inside diameter of the hole in the screw, drilled down a ways into the screw so the drill bit can grab it and use the drill bit like a handle to unscrew it.

Of course, there is always the option of finding the jackass that sold you the card and kicking him in the teeth. It won't fix it, but it'll make you feel better.
