Ok, I've already got most of the Desktop machines and servers up already. But the thing I'm not sure about is the fileserver. I am currently running a dual PIII 600 Windows Server 2003 fileserver. We are most likely going to switch over to a newer machine. So what distro / server should we use? I've been looking at FreeNAS and think it would be the perfect solution, But I'm still learning about linux and am unsure how FreeNAS will like all the controller cards we are using. We are really cheap so we have like 9 HD's in this case, and 4 controller cards :p. Bassically I want to be able to run probably 2 SATA controller cards and integrate with other linux machines and windows ( :( ) machines alike. So NFS? SAMBA? FreeNAS? What setup do you guys think would work the best?

EDIT: Also the HD's already are full of data so can I use a Linux / BSD machine to access NTFS? or to somehow convert to ext3?

freenas should be just fine. its based on freebsd. i have several freebsd servers running on some of the latest server and desktop hardware from both dell and hp.
